Man, why is it that every time there’s some kind of big discussion about anything related to new #StarTrek, everyone just behaves like complete lunatics? On one side you’ve got the “is this what Star Trek has become?” crowd hell bent on grinding their axe about what they hate.
And honestly, on the other side, waaaay too many defenders of current #StarTrek jump into hyper defensive mode. Even the most tepid “I’m not sure I like this” gets met with a “get over it, things change” tidal wave that is just so aggressive.
I get that’s largely a learned response from the early days of #StarTrekDiscovery where fans like me felt like we were maybe in a bit of a small minority and we needed to get loud and proud because the hate was just so relentless.
But like…I think we won? Five shows are on the air, there’s no sign any air is being let out of the #StarTrek franchise balloon and so - please - I’m begging you - can we create a little room for people to offer constructive criticism or things they’re just not vibing with?
Not every “eh I don’t know that I love this is” is an existential attack against the very possibility of more #StarTrek. So maybe we can dial it down a couple of notches and let a discussion have room to breath?
Not everyone loves the new Ferengi design, but to read some of your reactions it’s like your first born child has just been served a death warrant. It’s art! It’s subjective! Tastes differ! I get going ham on people who are only out for blood and have nothing but hate to share.
But maybe, before immediately going to red alert and firing off a full spread of quantum torpedoes - take a breath and move on. Constructive criticism grounded in a person’s subjective tastes won’t kill the franchise. It might even make it better.
This is not a “both sides” thread because fuck the Fandom Menace utterly and completely. But it is a sincere request for my fellow #StarTrek fans who love the current iteration of the franchise and who are invested in its success to learn that criticism is not hate and is ok.
Not everyone loves the Ferengi design. It’s not a personal attack on you, it has no bearing on the show’s success, and you can’t talk people out of a subjective reaction about what matches their tastes. So please, please, please, can we go back to yellow alert?
It’s fine. #StarTrek is here to stay. We won. Let’s not act like everything is an existential attack on the franchise, the shows, or its creatives. END.
