‘Today, we recognize Indigenous peoples’ resilience and strength as well as the immeasurable positive impact that they have made on every aspect of American society,’ the proclamation, which Biden signed on Friday, read.
‘Today, we acknowledge the significant sacrifices made by Native peoples to this country — and recognize their many ongoing contributions to our Nation.’
More than 100 cities and several states have replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples' Day to recognize the decimation that Native people experienced after Columbus and other European colonists arrived on the continent.

A new law in California will require free menstrual products to be available at all public schools. The requirement extends to institutions that cover 6th through 12th grade, community college, and the state university system. Image
Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed the Menstrual Equity for All Act on October 8. The bill was introduced by California State Assemblymember Cristina Garcia (D). The law will take effect at the beginning of the next school year.
'Just as toilet paper and paper towels are provided in virtually every public bathroom, so should menstrual products,' Garcia said in the statement.

Give it up for 480 Otis, folks. The elderly brown bear, believed to be approx 25 years old, was crowned the 2021 winner of Fat Bear Week. It is actually his 4th time coming in first place in the annual online tournament.
Started in 2014 as Fat Bear Tuesday before expanding into a full week, Fat Bear Week is a competition organized by Explore.org, Katmai National Park, and the Katmai Conservancy.
The competition highlights how the many bears in the park bulk up before entering their winter hibernation periods. This year, Otis earned more than 51,000 votes, beating out a runner-up bear named 151 Walker by more than 6,000.
