Has #JonGruden engaged in racist, homophobic, and sexist, misogynistic behavior? Yes! Over multiple years? Yes! Should he be held accountable for his behavior? Absolutely! Should he make restitution to the people he affected? For sure!
Remember, #JonGruden is the result of a societal system that condones that kind of behavior. I feel that it is disingenuous in many instances to blame the individual person without also holding the system culpable. But that is likely what the #NFL and other organizations will do.
They will use him as a scapegoat while simultaneously keeping systems in place that do much more damage than calling someone names. I hate how we clamor for the bad person but don’t look at the bad system that allowed that behavior.This happens in many organizations.
When we learn about bad individual behavior we want to publicly denounce the behavior. After all, reputations are at stake. Some might even be concerned about doing the right thing. But what is your organization doing privately?
Do you still have recruiting practices that lead to predominantly White applicants and finalists? Is your administration predominantly White despite the fact that you have higher proportions of historically marginalized people at the bottom of your org?
Do you release your diversity, inclusion and equity data? By racioethnicity, gender, rank, and division. Do you track these statistics? Please check yourself and your org before forcefully denouncing other organizations. There is much work for all of us to do. #SharedSisterhood
