Have been listening to @jrezaian’s superb podcast, 544 days. & was thinking about the months in 2015 when the timeline of the sham judicial proceedings seemed related to the timeline of the Iran nuclear talks. “indictment” announced april 2015, “trial” may 26, 2015,…
“conviction” oct. 11, 2015. the sham judicial proceedings basically geared up as the parties were heading into what they thought were the final round of talks, which stretched into july, when deal reached july 14…
the prisoner swap talks were happening in a separate channel than the nuclear talks, but Jason’s IRGC captors seem to have had their own agenda which was related to the nuclear talks calendar. …
the prisoner swap talks seemed to go into higher gear after the jcpoa was reached in july 2015, & before implementation day in january 2016, when he was ultimately released. was struck, in thinking about that calendar, that as jason’s hostage takers were in negotiations on a swap
they seized Siamak Namazi, who remains in Evin prison to this day, six years later. Jason was “convicted” on Oct. 11, 2015. Siamak Namazi was arrested two days later, on Oct. 13, 2015. The IRGC added another hostage to its collection, as it was negotiating a swap of the others
It is truly hard to believe that Siamak’s case has not been resolved to this day.

🧵A senior Israeli official, speaking to reporters on background today, pressed for Iran to face further diplomatic isolation. When asked about Saudi Iran talks, he said he thought Iran should be diplomatically isolated.
Though US and western parties expressing increased frustration with Iran not returning to talks, he suggested it was still too early for in depth US Israeli discussions about possible military action. US still at stage of looking at situation, analyzing it, he said.
He suggested it might be appropriate for the other parties to rebuke Iran at the next IAEA board of governors meeting in November.

🧵@mikememoli reports: In a letter to the National Archives, WH counsel Dana Remus rejected Trump’s attorneys' attempt to withhold documents requested by the House Select Comm. “Pres. Biden has determined that an assertion of executive privilege is not in the best interests
“of the United States, and therefore is not justified as to any of the documents.”
“These are unique and extraordinary circumstances,” Remus added. “Congress is examining an assault on our Constitution and democratic institutions provoked and fanned by those sworn to protect them
“& the conduct under investigation extends far beyond typical deliberations concerning the proper discharge of the President’s constitutional responsibilities. The constitutional protections of executive privilege should not be used to shield, from Congress or the public,

This was an incredibly illuminating Fresh Air interview with @mariaressa about propaganda and disinformation and populist authoritarianism npr.org/2021/01/06/953…
Ressa: “We were the canary in the coal mine … we are a former colony of the United States, a protectorate. We also speak English. This is a country where a lot of the tactics, digital tactics, are tested….” npr.org/2021/01/06/953…
This part of the interview really resonated: “when you're in a battle for facts, journalism is activism. And that's a big shift because I grew up a traditional journalist...&I actually realized in this day and age, you have to call it. You have to say a lie is a lie…”

🧵Sen. Angus King (I-Maine), a member of Senate Armed Services Comm., noted to reporters on a call tonight that the committee held only one hearing on Afghanistan all last year, the year the Trump admin struck the deal with the Taliban to pull all US troops out of Afghanistan
By contrast, they have held 5 hearings on Afghanistan this year (since Ds took control of Senate). He noted a great deal of the hearing today was spent on whether we should have left Afghanistan at all. He thought that was a question we should have been asking a year ago
after the Doha agreement committed all US troops to leave by May 2021. The Armed Serv. comm has had 5 hearings on Afghanistan this year, & 1 last year, King said. Important context. The question of should we have left at all dominated the meeting this morning. But SASC wasn’t
