Building a following is tough these days.

However, you can drive a ton of growth just by asking your followers a...question.

We used this hack to boost our Twitter following by 30% in 2 months.

And increase impressions by 300% in 30 days.

Let's break it down.

🧵
Literally all you have to do is ask your followers a question.

Or two. Or twelve.

Sounds easy, right?

Wrong!
First, you have to ask the RIGHT type of questions.

At Foundation, we try to keep the questions extremely focused on marketing or social media.

Asking people what they had for dinner or what type of coffee they like...never really took off.
With these questions, you want to give your followers the ability to show off their knowledge.

If the question is too obtuse or random, people will scroll right past it.

But if you make it easy to answer & right in their wheelhouse, they will jump at the chance to answer.
For example, this question walked the line perfectly.

It was open-ended, so almost any of our followers could answer it.

But asking them for an "underrated channel" gave them the ability to show off their knowledge.

(It was our most popular Tweet for the whole month.)
This is another good example of that idea.

The question was also open-ended, any marketing tool could be the right answer.

It was framed in a way that "veteran" marketers could give some advice to a "new" marketer.

And brands could also plug their tools, which they did.
On the other hand, this question was way too open-ended.

Instead of asking for one piece of advice, we gave our followers too much freedom.

And when you give people too many options, they will never act on just one. Or answer your question.

It only got one like.....from me.
This question suffered from a similar problem.

I think it would have performed a lot better if we asked someone to describe their job in one word to their younger self.

It would have led to a lot of funny or sarcastic answers.

But sometimes you need those!
So when asking your own questions:

✅ Stick to your niche or industry
✅ Ask for a specific outcome or answer
✅ But allow for open-ended answers
✅ And help your followers show off their knowledge

If you can hit all those points with one question, you're made in the shade.
BUT asking the right questions is only half of this hack.

You have to be ready to ENGAGE after the fact as well.

Don't just hit publish & hope your question blows up on its own.
Every answer your question gets, you should try to respond to.

Unless the answer is overtly negative, or not related to the question at all.

But not every response has to be a full-blown thought.
Sometimes it can be as simple as asking the user to elaborate on their answer.

These are my favorite because it gives that user to show off even more of their knowledge.

And most of the time this leads to other users jumping into the discussion.
Another easy way to respond to every answer is by using a simple GIF.

I mainly use GIFs when the user answers a question almost perfectly.

Or if they answer it in a funny/sarcastic way.
And finally, bring your team into the conversations.

They can answer questions or respond to other users to help keep the conversation going.

I like to answer from my personal account to remind people that they are talking to a real person too!
So there you have it!

Everything I just laid out can be used for almost any type of content. Not just questions.

Matching your niche, considering your followers, responding to every share, etc.

All of those ideas can be used when you share your next blog post or video.

Zapier drives 5+ million sessions to its "Best Of" listicles each year.

It's a super impressive metric.

But that doesn't mean anything if they CAN'T convert those readers.

Zapier has that figured out too.

And every great content writer should want to know their secrets...

🧵
Over the past 5+ years, Zapier has built an incredible SEO moat with these listicles.

These ~100 listicles currently drive over 455k sessions per month & rank on 287k keywords.

From the best note-taking apps to the best URL shorteners, they have a listicle for it.
They rank in the top spots for things like:

🔗 URL Shortener - 85k searches/month
✅ To-Do List - 54k searches/month
💻 Link Shortener - 49k searches/month
📆 Calendar App - 10k searches/month

Yet, they don't produce any apps that are related to those keywords.

Would you create a separate homepage for .0042% of your customers?

Probably not.

What if they drove 33% of your revenue?

🧵
Coursera has over 77+ million users across the globe.

Yet, they drive 1/3rd of their revenue is from only about 3,000 accounts.

Who are these mega spenders?

Businesses!
It hasn't always been like this.

Coursera started by targeting basically everyone who wanted to learn.

Now they use a hybrid model that targets both businesses & individual learners.

They wanted to become a "university for companies" instead of just offering general courses

A few weeks ago someone told me "marketing doesn't really matter as long as you have a great product."

So why does Sony, Nike & Apple even have marketing teams?

🧵
In 2020, Adobe was reported to spend $3.6 Billion on sales & marketing.

Even though they produce & sell "great products."

Who are these mega spenders?

🧵
Businesses!

You might not have even known there was a @coursera For Business.

But it brought in a whopping $136M+ in revenue for last year.

From around 3k different companies.

And that revenue share is going to get even larger next year as the company doubles down. Image
It hasn't always been like this.

Coursera started as a strictly B2C business targeting individual learners.

However, with this model, they weren't going to be able to drive massive yearly growth.

Especially because their main market was students.

And students don't spend 💰. Image

I usually hate automated emails from brands.

But I recently got one from @Grammarly that was almost perfect.

It even made me move them to my Primary inbox.

Because it was actually valuable.

🧵
The first thing I noticed about this email was the subject line.

I mean, that's what got me to click the email in the first place!

It wasn't salesly or trying too hard to get your attention.

Instead, Grammarly starts the whole interaction on a positive & friendly note. Image
Next, they keep the positivity rolling with a writing badge.

I got ""Tolstoy-Like"" for writing 7 weeks in a row.

This gamification might seem silly.

But it's a great way to give your users a pat on the back.

Especially for super-engaged users, like myself & other writers. Image

Shipping & Logistics is a VERY complicated industry.

So how did @ShipBob grow to:
✅ 5000 e-commerce customers
✅ $330 million in funding
✅ $1B valuation

While appealing to small businesses owners?

And competing with Amazon?

They became master storytellers.

🧵
Shipping & logistics is complicated.

ShipBob makes it easy.

However, explaining that to a new user is VERY tough.

Especially when talking about their features would make a new user's head spin.

So to get around this, ShipBob has embraced social proof like no other company.
One of the first things you see on their homepage is a review from a customer.

The open white space, compelling design & friendly headshot make it impossible to ignore.

This is the point!

They want you to focus on the social proof & story, before getting lost in the features.
