I'm hearing a lot of frustration about Google's "two-phase embargo" for the Google Pixel, especially after this great video here:
The skepticism makes sense because brands have definitely abused this greatly, but I think Google is different.
First, yes, I'm part of #teampixel, but no, I'm not sucking up, being paid to say this, or am I a shill. Let's leave the dumb comments out.
Okay, here's the issue that Google has and it's a rough spot to be in.
1. Google is actually trying to make reviews more equitable.
They want to give phones to influencers in #teampixel but it is a huge risk and liability to do this BEFORE the announcement. The number of people breaking embargo or doing more than what they're supposed to just today should show you how risky it would be to give it out early
So they deliver it AFTER the event for people in #teampixel. There are DIFFERENT marketing teams for different regions (USA/Canada/UK, etc.) and this is where things can get even messier, but that's a tangent.
The fact that they invite so many people into #teampixel is great!
That leads us to:
2. Google wants to give EVERYONE a chance to have time for a full review video/content, not just the media and tier 1 creators. So there's an embargo for full reviews so that smaller creators in #teampixel have a chance to put out videos w/everyone else
And this is consistent with how #teampixel works. They're insanely flexible and trying to give smaller creators a shot to be a part of what they're doing. The fact that I leak out stuff and they DEFINITELY know who I am and I can still be a part of #teampixel kind of proves that.
The rules we're given are super lax compared to everyone else who tells us what to say and how to say it. Google says "do whatever you want to do with it, or nothing at all, but if you do, make sure you tag it with #teampixe and #giftfromgoogle to disclose and be transparent."
They also make it clear that there's that embargo, which is OPTIONAL. If you don't want to take part in the embargo, they'll STILL send out a phone to you but AFTER the embargo.
It's not to strong-arm you in any way. They'll still work with you.
So to creators complaining about the two-phase embargo, you signed up for it. If you don't like it, you don't have to get it early.
For everyone else, I can confidently say that Google is the best company I've ever worked with for things, period.
You would be surprised at how much of a nightmare other companies can be about things. If you even say anything bad about them or even constructive, you're blacklisted.
Google doesn't do that. I've been extremely critical of them in the past...and I LEAK THINGS and I'm still in.
There's the CONTEXT on why Google does this. Just because other companies do it for shady, scummy reasons doesn't mean Google is trying to hide something or manipulate creators.
If anything, they're trying to give everyone a chance to be a part of what they're doing.
You actually have time for a real review that is useful. Even if the videos people making now are optional, they’ll do it asap because of SEO/being first. If it was called a “review” it would be a disservice with little actual use of it.
Wait, Apple is charging $4.99 just to talk to Siri to listen to Apple Music???
New HomePod Mini colors. While not “anything new” they look great! Glad there are options for people that like the HomePod Mini. As an audio engineer, not my preference. #AppleEvent
New AirPods. Great if you don’t like having earbuds that go into your ear canal. You lose out on passive noise cancellation and bass, comparatively, but it’s good that there’s an option! #AppleEvent
Here are the corroborated #Pixel6 and #Pixel6Pro prices in the Target inventory system in the US.
Pixel 6: $599
Pixel 6 Pro: $898
Google has to be subsidizing this phone like crazy. This is insanity. #teampixel
Normally, every year I tell people to NOT buy the Google Pixel right away because they often put it on sale in late November.
This year, I’M NOT suggesting that.
You have a combination of these insane prices plus the chip shortage. It’s going to be hard to buy these.
If google wanted to get their headline of “Google Pixel 6 Sells out,” pricing it at this level will finally get them that headline along with that chip shortage.
Google is subsidizing this phone like crazy, and I'm legitimately shocked. Honestly, no other company could do this other than Google or Apple because of their SaaS component.
All that to say, the second price seems wrong. $898 doesn't make sense both from a typical pricing point and it's not even listed in the image. I'd be skeptical about that one.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Thank you for an incredible 2018! I'm so grateful for all of you and the insane opportunities and experiences that I've had!
I had a goal of 25,000 subscribers for the end of this year and ended it with 36,300+ subscribers with December being the biggest one yet!
At the beginning of August, I hit 1 million views & this year I end with 3 MILLION views.
I recorded a super candid & vulnerable thank you for everyone who got me there at the end of this video. I was so grateful & humbled back then & I'm even more now.
2018 was the year that I found community. I discovered an amazing community of people who watched me, which blows my mind. I still underestimate all of you every time ❤️🙏
