Whistleblowers need all the support they can get. In the UK, we saw @shahmirUK being outed & destroyed. @chrisinsilico put himself into prolonged legal & personal jeopardy. It is HARD. It is dangerous. And I am grateful & relieved that @FrancesHaugen has the support she needs.
I've been in awe of how impactful the roll-out of @franceshaugen whistleblowing has been & hope it encourages others to follow in her footsteps.

Luminate also funds @FBoversight & Facebook used same PR playbook against it too.

Oops. @llaurieclarke, that’s unfortunate. A crashing mistake in your very first paragraph. @IndependentSage didn’t organise that summit. 😱 Oh & they’ve never been called ‘iSAGE’. 😱😱 And the letter you refer to wasn’t them either 😱😱😱
This ain’t right either. ‘Activist’, sigh, Cambridge Analytica didn’t ‘break’ in 2016 & I’d love to hear more about this ‘troll army’ 🧐 Oh, & I don’t do ‘media support’ for the group that most definitely isn’t ‘iSAGE’ but if you’d answered my message you could have asked me that
Hello @bmj_latest. You literally footnote the paper yet failed to spot that the lead author *has nothing to do* with Independent SAGE. And that’s literally the opening to your article about how wrong they’ve been 😂

Oops.

The entire system of science-based policy making in Britain is broken.

And to everyone who’s ever knocked @IndependentSage, allow me to point out that they’ve met twice weekly throughout the pandemic & put their advice directly into the public domain

inews.co.uk/news/politics/…
The country is still a total Covid disaster. They’re still meeting twice a week. And honestly we need them now more than ever.

My personal belief is that SAGE, @independentSAGE, the Royal Colleges & above all @uksciencechief & @CMO_England need to hold own summit & inquiry.

The entire UK science establishment has failed. And they need to own that in order to have any chance of moving beyond it

Yoo hoo @George_Osborne! The feds are raiding your boss’s house.
This is who Oleg Deripaska is. If he goes down, a large part of the British establishment is going with him
Nobody in Britain has paid a blind bit of attention to who Deripaska is, the power he wields & the effect he’s had. But read this from US Senate. And understand how deep this rot runs. He ran the Kremlin’s influence ops, it said. And now pays @George_Osborne’s wages

My God. This lede.

‘Britain’s early handling of the Coronavirus pandemic was one of the worst public health failures in UK history’
This parliamentary report is embargoed until midnight. But its contents is utterly devastating
‘PM could have saved thousands by locking down earlier’

Pretty much every single person who made such an obviously deadly & flawed decision is still in power now.

I’m so incredibly DELIGHTED for @mariaressa but I also want to explain why this decision by @NobelPrize is so important at this moment (& why it’s more very bad news for Facebook)
More perhaps than anyone, @mariaressa has explained how ‘a lie told a million times becomes a fact’.

She’s watched how her country became a brutal dictatorship & understood first hand how this was done through control of the information space

theguardian.com/world/2021/apr…
She’s spent much of the last 5 years trying to warn the west what is coming for us.

How the firestorm of lies & distortions & fake news are a dictator’s best friend.

And how Silicon Valley’s failure to deal with it is a fundamental danger to democracy

OH MY GOD, @mariaressa!!! You’ve only gone & won the Nobel Prize!!!!

This is AMAZING! I am so unbelievably proud to be friends with this amazing woman who has stood up for journalists everywhere. 👏👏👏
Maria is facing prison in the Philippines for the outrageous charge of ‘cyberlibel’ & she has shown such courage in standing up to Duterte. If you’re new to her work, this is an interview I did with her for @observer in April:

Here’s the citation.

‘For their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression which is a precondition for democracy & lasting peace’

Congrats to Dmitry Muratov also.

A GOOD day for journalism.
