I’m sensing a lot of anxiety in Mariposa about the deaths of Jonathan Gerrish, Ellen Chung, their 1-year-old daughter, and their dog on a hiking trail in August.
Not knowing the cause of death has people speculating about nearby dangers.
Answers coming at 2 p.m.

We’ll carry the press conference LIVE on @abc30 at 2 p.m. and I’ll file stories for 4, 5, and 6 p.m.
They were in a very hot Devil’s Gulch valley on a 110-degree day.
Made it most of the way around Hite Cove Trail.
They were found about 1.5 miles from their vehicle.
Nearby water sources likely contained toxic algae bloom.
The trail would’ve been a lot steeper, harder, and hotter than hikers would expect unless they were familiar with this trail and the valley.
Some of the local speculation has hit on dehydration as a possible cause of death.
Family members will not be at this press conference, but the sheriff’s office has a statement from them that they’ll read.
Mariposa County Sheriff Jeremy Briese says Jonathan Gerrish, Ellen Chung, their child died of hypothermia and probable dehydration.
“A very unique case to investigate.”
The dog’s cause of death is still undetermined, but also likely heat-related.
Jonathan mapped out the Hite Cove Trail on an app, but wouldn’t have know the elevation.
A witness saw the truck going towards the trail Aug. 15 ~ 8am.
Temperature was around 75 at elevation of about 3800 ft.
They walked 2.2 miles down trail down to 1900 ft. And 92-99 degrees.
They went down a little further and experienced temps over 100.
Then they started the ascent in almost pure sun because Ferguson Fire burned the previous tree cover. 107-109 degrees. They made it about 2 miles.
*hyperthermia
Babysitter found they were missing Aug. 16.
Searchers found them Aug. 17.
They had one 85-ounce water container, emptied, and no other water.
Here’s how the terrain and conditions looked the day they were found.
They sampled water in the area and testing showed toxins in the water, but no evidence they ingested any of the water.
They don’t know of any human deaths from Anatoxin-a, which is what was in there, but it has killed animals.
Sheriff Briese says not a lot of people use this trail during the hottest months.
Partly attributes this tragedy to the family’s unfamiliarity.
The app they saw might’ve led them to believe it would be easier than it is in reality.
This trail is about 8 miles. They made it about 6.5 miles.
But temperatures went from 75 to over 100 quickly and they didn’t get back to cooler, higher ground.
There was a minute amount of water left in their 85-ounce container.
It did not test positive for Anatoxin-a, so it seems like they didn’t collect water from the Merced River.
The family’s statement praises @MariposaSheriff for their empathy and commitment to the investigation.

Black-owned Clovis store, Just My Essentials, was vandalized overnight. @ClovisPolice_CA are now investigating.
“BLM” crossed out, N-bombs marked instead, and products taken and destroyed.
@ClovisPolice_CA Owner Chanel Wapner says she's the *only* Black store owner in the @OldTownClovis area and this isn't the first time she's been a target for hatred.
And for the people who seem so eager to accuse the victim of this crime... (there were a lot on Facebook pretty quickly.)
She reported this to police.
Filing a false report is a crime.
Her husband is a criminal defense attorney.
They know the law.
This isn’t faked.
The Bad News Bears #Yankees are back, but keeping it close despite creating a quick strike 1st inning 3-run rally for Miami, terrible fielding, and only 6 baserunners in 6 innings, 2 of whom were erased by double plays.
7 baserunners in 7 innings, 3 of whom were erased by doubles plays.
So essentially, 4 baserunners in 7 innings and it’s still a game they could win by turning one of those DPs into an HR in these last couple innings.
But would the #BadNewsBears#ScrantonYankees do that?
#BREAKING: @CityofFresno will release the independent auditor's review of the London Wallace case "no later than the end of next week."
They talked to John Gliatta and will release excluded review as a supplement to 2nd quarter report.
@CityofFresno@ABC30 The third quarter report is due out on the next three weeks, but they'll release the review to this specific case a little early.
“As with all OIR reports, documents cannot be released without a review by our legal counsel to ensure that both the rights of the complaining party and the officers involved are protected.," said city manager Wilma Quan...
Confusing Tuesday update from the state.
They have Fresno County meeting the metrics to get out of purple.
Awesome, right?
Caveat #1: A county needs to do it two weeks in a row to change tiers.
Caveat #2: Check the stat I circled.
(1/2)
It doesn’t match the state’s own data for the raw number of new cases per day in this county, and by a significant enough margin to keep us from qualifying for the red tier this week.
I’m not working @ABC30 today, but I’m about to ask Dr. Rais Vohra for details.
Dr. Vohra confirms we've met the metrics for moving from purple to red.
Need to do it one more week.
I'll ask about the discrepancy when I can.
UPDATE: Fresno County reported 11 new coronavirus deaths Tuesday for a total of 348.
The county reported 453 new cases in the last 4 days, so 114 per day.
And they reported 9915 tests, so the positivity rate was 4.6%.
Recoveries up 1000. 61% have recovered.
Active cases = 10,084.
The latest mortality review covers the first 339 deaths.
93 patients had no underlying conditions. 32 of those were under the age of 65.
246 had co-morbidities, with diabetes and high blood pressure being the top 2.
204 of the 339 COVID victims in this county were Hispanic. (60%)
National excess deaths data supports the scientific community belief that COVID has killed even more than 200,000 total counted by @Worldometers now.
My initial examination of Fresno County deaths data does the same.
These are people who wouldn’t have died except for the virus.
BREAKING: Judge Tharpe issues an injunction ordering @ImmanuelbyFaith to immediately cease and desist in person instruction.
The ruling does not end the school’s fight, but it puts more legal weight behind Fresno County’s health officer order. @ABC30
Judge Tharpe said of the Court’s decision “based on the materials before it, the court determines that it is reasonably probable that the County will prevail on the merits” at trial.
He added that “based on the materials before it, the court determines that the interim harm the County would be likely to sustain if the injunction were denied is monumental in comparison to the harm defendants would likely suffer if the preliminary injunction were issued.”
