Hi gender critical people, in case you don't know, accusing trans or gay people of being pedophiles or "nonces" because they exist, or because they are supporting their own (or others) LGBT+ rights, are transphobic and homophobic hate crimes in the UK.
I get that your GC leaders have been screaming "perverts!" for years, but they do that (mostly) without mentioning specific names.

However, when you directly accuse someone of being a nonce or pedophile (or enabling pedophilia), that's a hate crime.

citizensadvice.org.uk/law-and-courts…
If you were the person(s) who screamed "nonce!" at Jen, and she were to decide to report this incident to the police, it wouldn't be your GC leaders having to face the consequences. They'd be entirely happy for you to be a martyr for their cause.

Also, what are you doing?
How have you found yourself in a movement where at a conference there are people screaming "nonce!" at trans people for just existing. How have you become part of a movement where the first thing people do when they see a trans person is think of them as a pedophile?
"Pedo scum" has been the scream of the Alt-Right for a long-time now.

I know some of you still think of yourselves as "lifelong Lefties," so what does it say about your movement that you're employing the tactics of the Alt-Right?
And if you're a gay supporter of the LGBA, and you think some other supporters don't think of you as a "pervert" because you're gay, you're deluded.

I saw comments directed against gay men on the stage accusing them of speaking about sex in a way straight men "never would."
The rhetoric online for years has been that trans people and people who support trans rights are "perverts," "pedophiles," and "groomers." And yet, some gender critical people in the pub after the conference were appalled when a GC leader abused a GC trans person to their face.
I'm not sure how those GC people would think that just because a trans person supports the GC movement they wouldn't be subjected to GC abuse because they are trans, IRL? There are multiple incidents of it happening online. Do you think this is some sort of online game?
How can you be stunned to find out that there are real consequences in real life for trans people (even the "good" ones) from your years of online rhetoric, and from the UK media's relentless harassment campaign in support of your movement? Yes, you've been enabling transphobia.
And if you are a gender critical supporter for 4 years (looking at you @jackappleby) and you find yourself standing beside your crying gender critical trans friend in a pub because they've just been abused to their face by a GC leader, *you* are partially responsible for that.
And if I can't convince you that it's morally the wrong thing to do to shout "nonce!" at trans people or to accuse gay people who support trans rights of pedophilia or enabling pedophilia, maybe you should stop doing it because it's a hate crime?
This era of trans panic will end, just like the era of gay panic ended, and while your GC leaders will express support for you, and there'll be fundraisers etc, in the end, they'll still mostly have their careers etc. while you'll be the one left with a criminal record.

Stop.

Hi @soppystern, @jackappleby and @artymortyarty.

You might want to have a conversation and decide which version of gay rights history best suits your anti-trans propaganda.

Was it "brash," or was it "almost always civil and polite?"

Can't be both lads.

Happy to help. ImageImage
I don't know what was happening where you were, but over here some of the opposition to Relgious campaigners against gay and women's rights were stoving in the windows of the Youth Defence offices on a regular basis, while others were engaging in dialogue. Image
Perhaps, it was *both* then and now, it is also both?

What gay rights advocates never did was sit down and try to convince the Religious Right they were wrong. The RR still believe the same things they did 10 years ago. They had conversations with people who weren't bigots.

Since trying to call out overt transphobia, @jackappleby - a "gender critical" man - has discovered what the movement he has been supporting for 4 years is like:

- Denial of transphobia
- Fake news
- Hounding of those who call out bigotry.
- a bunch of fucking lunatics. ImageImageImageImage
Jack has lost over 300 followers since calling out "transphobic bigotry" in a pub after the LGB Alliance conference this week, which, concincidentally, is almost as many people as were at the conference.

It isn't a "section" of the movement, @jackappleby

It *is* the movement.
Julia has never been secretive about her views and Jack seems shocked (!) that Julia, IRL, would upset a trans person, when she's been at it for years. Jack is is an utter fool for thinking that Julia would act any differently around a GC trans woman.

We exist in a time when @netflix has a brilliant documentary called "Disclosure" about how disgusting movies like Ace Ventura are towards trans people, but it also streams Ace Ventura!

Why is Netflix still streaming a movie that is horrifically transphobic?
For anyone who doesn't know, a major plot point (spoiler) is that the bad "guy" is a trans woman. It's revealed in a scene where the woman is "comically" stripped and shown to be tucking. Ace pukes about sleeping with her. Many other men puke about it too.
The idea that it's utterly disgusting to sleep with a trans woman gives rise to the "trans panic" defence in cases where it is claimed that discovering someone is trans is a mitigating factor in assault or murder of a trans person.

Martha and I were talking about this the other day, and I was saying how Jon probably supports Chapelle in this, and I hate being right.
Why did I think that?

Because Jon has form.

hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/dai…
I think Jon is a great man and a brilliant comedian, but like a lot of white, American liberal comics, he has huge blind spots about his culture. He exists as part of a comic culture where in 2012, people like Tina Fey thought it was okay to have blackface on 30 Rock...

For years I saw people who think they had "reasonable" objections to gay and trans rights activism cite a singular "gay/trans person who agrees with me," and I cannot believe a clearly intelligent person like Margaret Atwood has fallen into the same mode of thinking.
The media have been reporting that everyone who has "reasonable objections" to trans rights is subjected to death threats. I would encourage people to search terms like "kill homophobes" and explain how the hundreds of tweets you find there represent gay rights activism?
So, ask yourself, how have tweets tweeting about subjecting transphobes of violence become representative of those who support trans rights? If the media wanted, they could just as easily do the same thing with gay rights, except we have largely moved on from "gay panic."
