THREAD: Facebook once faced the threat of being removed from Apple's app store over maids being bought and traded on its websites, documents obtained by the @AP show.
A Filipina housemaid in Kuwait, who described being “sold” to another family through an Instagram post, told the @AP that she knew of others being “traded online like merchandise.”
Labor abuse on Facebook is such a problem that the Philippines has a team that does nothing but scour posts each day to try to protect desperate job seekers from criminal gangs and unscrupulous recruiters.
The papers are redacted versions of disclosures made by whistleblower Frances Haugen to the SEC, alleging Facebook was prioritizing profits over safety and hiding its own research from investors and the public.
The @AP joined with 16 other American news organizations who worked together to gain access to the thousands of pages of internal company documents. Each member of the consortium pursued its own independent reporting.
Among the stories published by @AP, our journalists are reporting on the conflict between profit and people within Facebook, and maids being bought and traded on the site in the Mideast.
