Some background. I was a Sergeant with #NYPD and was involved in a handful of shooting incidents. I am a @NRA LE firearms instructor & owned a security consulting & training company in Los Angeles.
I trained armed professionals, civilians & actors who wanted to prepare for auditions & movie/TV roles.
Prior to any firearm training I would provide all students, even LE members, with a packet that's primary purpose was addressing safe firearm handling.
Gun safety is a pretty simple formula.
1)Treat every gun like it's loaded. If anyone, including #BabyJesus hands you a gun & tells you it's unloaded, say thank you & verily it yourself.
You are ultimately responsible for anything that happens with that gun. No blame shifting
2) Keep you finger off the trigger & outside the trigger guard till you're ready to shoot. Guns don't go off on their own. Someone has to pull the trigger.
There is no such thing as an accidental discharge. Stop using that term.
There are only negligent discharges.
3) Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction in case you're an idiot and don't understand Rules 1 &2
4) Never, never ever point a gun at someone or something you're not comfortable killing because if you don't follow the first 3 rules that will be the likely outcome.
5) Know & be able to identify your target & what's beyond it.
I thought I was shooting at a deer but since it was far away I didn't realize it was my neighbor on his riding mower is not an excuse.
If missing that target can injure someone behind it DON'T SHOOT
5 simple rules
It appears @AlecBaldwin didn't follow any of these 5 simple rules & it ended in the death of an innocent woman. I see lots of blame shifting going on. The guy who said #ColdGun didn't shoot that woman. The inexperienced armorer didn't shoot that woman.
The person holding the gun, who didn't verify it was unloaded, pointed it at an innocent person & pulled the trigger is to blame... no one else.
Arrogant irresponsibility was the cause of this shooting. It was not an accident it was gross negligence.
