#CCGLive - A Coast Guard overflight of the #ZimKingston at 11:30 today shows smoldering but no visible flames in the containers. However, firefighters may find some active fire in the containers once they are able to board the ship.

#CCGLive : 6 firefighters were able to board the #ZimKingston last night as well as 7 crew from the ship. The Salvage Master and team will assess the situation today and estimate it may take several days to fully suppress smoldering and fires inside the containers.

From the Environmental Unit in Incident Command: air monitoring readings taken yesterday during the storm at 32 sites between Esquimalt Lagoon and along Dallas Road, were all below detection limits.

#CCGLive: What happens once the fire is fully extinguished on the #ZimKingston? Salvage experts will secure the containers; environmental experts will monitor this work; and we are ready to respond to any potential #MarinePollution.

Once the ship is secured, @Transport_gc inspectors will inspect the ship and then direct it to a port (not determined yet) for unloading and any further inspections. There may be changes to this process depending on the results of each step.

There’s a whole lot of work behind the scenes by the Incident Command Post and others to make this happen – far too much to list here!

#CCGLive: The owner of the #ZimKingston is working with Incident Command to find & recover the containers, but ongoing stormy weather and large swells continue to complicate their recovery. Modelling shows that the containers may reach #CapeScott on Northern Vancouver Island.

It is possible that some containers may wash up on the beach late this afternoon.

Due to the hazardous contents of some of the containers, members of the public are advised to avoid opening or moving them & call 1-800-889-8852 immediately.

#CCGLive: With the fire under control, the #ZimKingston crew were able to safely access the container bays on the ship. They now believe that 106 containers went overboard, not 40. The number of containers with hazardous goods – two - has NOT changed.

Contents of other containers overboard include toys, clothing, automotive parts, industrial parts and furniture. Unified Command expects that some of the containers have sunk and the Environmental Unit will assess for potential impacts.

No containers or debris have been reported on shore, however the National Aerial Surveillance Program (NASP) and our helicopters will be searching today, depending on weather.

#CCGLive: we located four #ZimKingston containers on shore near Cape Scott today. The containers have now been identified, referenced against the ship manifest, and do not contain hazardous chemicals.

It appears that at least one of the containers, containing refrigerators, has broken open. Unified Command has provided this information to the ship’s owner who has hired a contractor to recover the containers.

The location is remote and rugged, and planning for recovery operations is underway. The overall number of missing containers is now up to 109 and it may change again as more information comes in.

Mariners, aircraft and members of the public in the area are asked to report any sightings of containers to 1-800-889-8852 immediately and reminded to avoid opening or moving containers as two of the 109 containers contain hazardous chemicals.

#CCGLive: The Atlantic Raven continues to support operations at the #ZimKingston today with emergency tow and firefighting capacity if needed. Firefighters continue to work on the ship and on-shore air quality monitoring continues to show no impacts.

The ship’s owner is preparing for the recovery of the four containers found near #CapeScott yesterday and has hired an environmental company to advise on the operation.

Our helicopters and National Aerial Surveillance Program (NASP) will continue overflights of the shore today, looking for more containers, weather permitting. Modelling indicates any containers still floating will continue to move north.
