Rep. Nehls told me on 1/15 that the guards on the House floor would've been "totally justified" if they'd shot the rioters trying to enter the chamber.
Nehls had joined the USCP and several other House Rs in guarding the door from rioters trying to break in on 1/6.
"The guards are saying, 'stop banging on that. Don't come through that door. We will shoot you.' And I felt that it would have been totally justified in doing so. Thank goodness they didn't have to..."
Here’s the audio:
@RepTroyNehls called to claim these situations are different.
He says he ID'd a potential weapon (a flag pole w/ sharpened edge) that rioters used to break the window at the door he was at, which could've been used ag. them if they pushed thru. So shooting wouldve been justified
He argues Officer Byrd couldn't have known whether Babbitt was armed or not.
Video of the shooting shows that the ppl around her also had poles breaking the glass to get thru the barricade, which could've also been used as weapons.
This is also a far different take than what GOP Rep. Markwayne Mullin, who responded to the rioters alongside Nehls, told me on 1/12 re. Byrd.
"I hope he doesn't get dragged through the mud because he's actually a hero, because he actually he faced fear."
Mullin: "He had to take someone's life but in return he probably saved a whole bunch of people's lives. And that is a difficult thing for anybody to do that's never been in those situations...I commend that guy...that's why I hugged him. I said 'Sir, you did what you had to do'"

Clarification: This came from members of the USCP who used official letterhead, but it is NOT a formal statement from the USCP as a whole.
I’m deleting original tweet. In interest of ensuring that the correct attribution for the authors of the statement remains live, I am deleting and reposting:
NEWS: MEMBERS of the U.S. Capitol Police have issued a statement to members of Congress expressing "profound disappointment" with McConnell and McCarthy's positions on the Jan. 6 commission, citing the "trauma" that officers endured that day.
NEWS: Rep. Chip Roy in a memo to all House R offices bashes idea of Stefanik replacing Cheney as conference chair, per memo I obtained.
"We must avoid putting in charge Republicans who campaign as Republicans but then vote for and advance the Democrats’ agenda once sworn in..."
He adds: "Therefore, with all due respect to my friend, Elise Stefanik, let us contemplate the message
Republican leadership is about to send by rushing to coronate a spokesperson whose voting record
embodies much of what led to the 2018 ass-kicking we received by Democrats."
Roy, who once defended Cheney for her impeachment vote, also isn't standing by Cheney.
He says she will lose her job as conference chair b/c she pulled House R's "into distraction" as their voters instead want them to stop the "radical Democrat agenda."
Confirming my reporting: Here is the House Ethics Committee's notice to House Majority Whip Rep. Clyburn that he has been fined $5000 for going around a metal detector earlier this week.
Per the Capitol Police referral: “Representative Clyburn deliberately avoided being screened by refusing to submit to screening at the West lobby screening point. Congressman Clyburn went to the restroom, came out and continued past the officers… and into the House Chamber.”
Rs have new security video of Pelosi on 2/4 they plan to argue shows she entered Speakers Lobby to get onto House floor, claiming bc she didnt do metal detectors she skipped security protocol.
Falls on Cap police to determine violations. They did not report anything that day.
Key points:
-Her spox says she was wanded.
-The video doesnt show her entering the Speakers Lobby.
Serg at Arms on R claims in Feb: “Only the USCP can determine whether an individual has failed to complete security screening as only the USCP has sufficient training to determine compliance with USCP screening measures…I have not received any unusual incident report" re Speaker
