When Bill Maher says we must stop 'hating each other' to stop the descent to fascism it's not that he's wrong. But the right has no intention of dialing back the hate bc a comic they still think is a leftist tells them to. In effect, he's only calling on the left to b nicer (1)..
As if somehow our being nicer to the right will cause them to stop thinking we're evil satanic pedophiles who want to ban Christmas and make them all wear drag to the weekly Assata Shakur shrine we'll put in place of their churches...(2)...
Maher's obsession with cancel culture (like all Boomer comics upset they can't tell a good rape joke w/o pushback anymore) is only topped by his naivete. The right's commitment to fascism didn't come from wokeness, just like racism isn't caused by what Black people do...(3)
They want to destroy anything they perceive as liberal or left or progressive. They cannot be placated by niceness any more than any bully can be. I agree we have to find a way not to be hateful toward them, bc that makes things worse. But his solution is not one
