Does anyone remember this #flattenthecurve graphic from March 2020? It's been a while so I want to revisit it. A thread.
In March 2020, we were told that we had to take extreme measures to "flatten the curve" and avoid overwhelming our hospital system. That was the goal. Eventually most of us would get covid, but we had to do what we could to avoid all getting it at the same time
And then at some point, a bunch of people decided that their personal goal was no longer communal (avoid hospital overflow) but personal: avoid getting covid, for as long as possible, possibly forever. Everyone wanted to be the person who made it through this without getting it.
That made a certain amount of sense pre-vaccine, when getting covid carried a non-zero risk of hospitalization (gotta protect the hospitals!) or serious illness, or spreading it to vulnerable relatives. But post vaccine? What's the goal here?
I think this explains the litany of rageful "I did everything right and still got covid!" stories. People feel like they sacrificed for 19 months to avoid personally getting covid, and now that they have it they wonder what the point of that sacrifice is.
The point was to prevent hospital overflow!! But people are so self-centered that they cannot conceive of sacrifice for a communal goal that may not benefit you personally and directly. I get it, it sucks to be the broken egg.
What really bothers me now is the idea of people who won't wear masks or otherwise curtail their lives being called selfish. Who's selfish - the person who won't act to prevent you from getting a cold, or the person who demands that everyone act to prevent them from getting sick?
At this point, if you want to avoid getting covid, you need to take that on yourself. You cannot continue to demand that society comport itself in a way to prevent them from getting covid. We avoided hospital overflow, it's over, the end.

PSAL athletes have mandated vaccination and are still subject to arbitrary, senseless rules that are hindering their ability to compete, showcase their talent, and be recruited.
@NYCMayor can you please cha he these rules to allow our @NYCSchools
athletes to compete? 🧵
I spoke to @Coachlanese13 last night about the city's restrictions on PSAL. Right now, PSAL can only compete against other PSAL athletes. So our public school athletes cannot participate in state competitions, because athletes from other cities and towns will be there.
The city is hosting multiple state championships throughout this year. Athletes from around the state will be allowed to compete against each other, except if they go to NYC public schools. An elite NYC athlete is losing their chance to compete & to earn a state title.
SURVEILLANCE TESTING DOES NOT KEEP SCHOOLS OPEN. IT KEEPS THEM CLOSED.
Thank you.
I honestly, and in good faith, do not understand how testing asymptomatic kids keeps schools open. Finding asymptomatic cases requires classrooms to quarantine and keeps healthy kids out of school. I am willing to entertain good faith arguments to convince me otherwise.
This afternoon, I was contacted by a producer at a network news show asking if I wanted to be interviewed about "the new CDC school and mask guidance." I readily agreed. 🧵
Before we get any further I want to make my point upfront: the media has a story to sell, and the story is not "everything is ok and will continue to be ok." The story that sells is one of fear and panic.
Back to my story: I spoke about how my biggest concern about the upcoming school year was that it would be a 3rd year of disrupted school. That what kids needed was normalcy, and that in our post-vaccine world a return to normalcy was not only possible, but also necessary.
I am a registered Democrat. I have voted in every election (primary & general) since I turned 18. I have never once, not ever, voted for a Republican. I thought after Trump I never would.
Every day I meet someone who thinks that once teachers are vaxd, schools will magically go back to full time. But there is zero effort to tie teacher vax to open schools. A Rep Sen attempted to tie vax to a commitment to open schools. Was it a cynical move? Yes. But also smart.
D success in 2018 and 2020 relied on suburban (white) women who aren't really Democrats, but they didn't like Trump. D success in 2022 (including holding onto a majority in Congress) will depend on these women.
