Freedom at work is a 💎 we all chase. It can be achieved with few simple practices.

Here’s what my engineering manager taught me.

This helped me immensely, and never looked back again.

#workfromanywhere #WFH #remotework
“What’s the status of the task, are you on track?” kinda messages are the most annoying ones at work.

We always say “Give me space”.
We always say “Trust me”.

How to get that space? How to have someone trust in you?
Truth is “Trust begins at 0”. We have to consciously build it. Once built, it’s like a fortress, ~never falls. It then yields to freedom, space & independence. And usually rewarded with more-responsibilities and ultimately leadership.

Who doesn’t want to be a leader, eh?
5 practices to gain trust and are fundamental leadership qualities.

Each practice has a:
- Good trait you build 💎
- few tips to achieve it 👉

Let’s go through them.
💎 Be Predictable.

Predictable != Boring.
Be the punctual one, your team will love that trait. And the best part, it requires no skills.

👉 set a reminder 5 mins before the meeting
👉 Read the meeting agenda again
👉 Don’t take calls right before the meeting starts.
💎 Be Available.

With remote work here to stay, quick communication has become crucial.

👉 Use status of your communication tool effectively.
👉 Maintain consistent break times.
👉 Keep your “time to respond” fairly less, not necessarily instant.
💎 On-time reporting.

“5 more mins, I’ll be done”. And then 5 more mins, and many more. Finally, we compel the other one to follow up.

👉 Have a hard-pause, report the status no matter even if it’s WIP.
👉 Actively use task tracking-tools as good as WhatsApp.
💎 Maintain transparency.

You think, no one likes the bad news. NO! Everyone hates false news.

👉 Give the status/news as-is. Don’t underplay, don’t cover up.
👉 Ask, what else would you need to get the task done, more time, more resources.

This trait alone is worth Gold.
💎 Prioritise dependency tasks

“Don’t make the whole team fall”

👉 Identify the tasks that has your dependency, knock them first.
👉 Be in touch with other stakeholders.
👉 Give additional buffer for these tasks, it helps.
In summary,

• Be predictable.
• Be available.
• On time reporting.
• Maintain transparency.
• Prioritise dependency tasks.

These practices make you a dependable & reliable team player. That’s how TRUST is built.

And your desired freedom knocks your door.
See, you are just making yourself a better team player. Freedom, independence, respect are the outcomes.

I hope, these subtle practices will build trust in your teams and make your fortress a strong one.

More power to all the teams out there. 💪🚀

Reduced reading span is a hazard for knowledge seekers. We gotta fix it right away. Here’s my thoughts and story. 👇🧵
RIL (Read It Later) has cut short our reading-span and we became skip-junkies. We are loosing out on knowledge and have become merely good-content-collectors, that’s all.
A page in a book was earmarked to indicate “read again later” to gain different/more perspective, be motivated again.
