New blog post: How a virtual office can make your team more effective?…

#remotework #WorkFromHome #flatsocial
1) Enables more frequent casual communication: Meetings are a playful event, not another chore that has been added to one's calendar.
2) Foster serendipitous collaboration: It's all about fun because the most #creative moments happen exactly when participants are embedded in a playful collaborative space where they can explore ideas, create new connections and #brainstorm freely.

Freedom at work is a 💎 we all chase. It can be achieved with few simple practices.

Here’s what my engineering manager taught me.

This helped me immensely, and never looked back again.

#workfromanywhere #WFH #remotework
“What’s the status of the task, are you on track?” kinda messages are the most annoying ones at work.

We always say “Give me space”.
We always say “Trust me”.

How to get that space? How to have someone trust in you?
Truth is “Trust begins at 0”. We have to consciously build it. Once built, it’s like a fortress, ~never falls. It then yields to freedom, space & independence. And usually rewarded with more-responsibilities and ultimately leadership.

Who doesn’t want to be a leader, eh?

Late bloomers get a bad rap.

But that's about to change.

Structural shifts unfolding in today's economy mean that not "having it all figured out" by your 20's may actually put you at an ADVANTAGE.

1/ Today's education system is still set up to support the industrial economy. Sit down, be quiet, memorize... and eventually, you might just learn to become a cog in the great wheel and get yourself a guaranteed pension.
2/ Unsurprisingly, this has produced generations of workers who are good at following orders, not causing too much trouble, and completing repetitive tasks. But, there's a problem...

Bitcoin & remote work are like...

Peanut butter & jelly
Chips & salsa
Milk & cookies

...people just aren't quite aware of the paring yet.

There are 5 principles where #Bitcoin and #remotework perfectly align. Together, they'll drive the benefits of the digital age.

1. Digitally native

Remote work's breakthrough is the ability to communicate digitally. When we can communicate, we can create value over the internet.

Bitcoin's breakthrough is the ability to store and transact value digitally with out the need for paper, banks, or gold.
2. Portable

Remote work: You can bring your income, or value creation, anywhere.

Bitcoin: You can bring your money, or stored value, anywhere.

1/🧵People quitting instead of coming back to offices is very real

Amazing for startups who will recruit the most talented folks who are well paid (some might say overpaid) at big companies—but who will take significantly less in order to work from home #remotework #WorkFromHome
2/Executives have figured out how to manage remote workers so well, that they will need 20% less of them. basically, low performers “have nowhere to hide” in a remote world where folks do an SOD and EOD (start of day and end of day) on SLACK
3/plus 20% less overall cost of maintaining an office, which even if you do offsite meetings will still be 10-15% savings

Excerpts from "'America’s Post-Pandemic Geography' - Covid-19 is transforming all types of communities, from big cities to suburbs to rural areas" - from the Summer 2021 Issue of @CityJournal - by @Richard_Florida & @joelkotkin. A #Thread.

1. "The #Pandemic will pass...But in geographic terms, today’s Covid-precipitated crises may well prove to be the most transformative event that #America has experienced since the great migration to the suburbs after World War II."
2. "....centrifugal forces pull some people out of #Cities: families seek more #Affordable space, backyards, and access to better schools. With the wider scope of choice that #RemoteWork affords, some are casting their nets wider and moving farther afield..."

One of the first things I share with my professional colleagues before we start working together is my list of expectations. I find it creates a healthy, collaborative environment. I hope it can also be useful to you and your team.

1. If anything is blocking you or your team or you find what you do unfulfilling, let me know immediately.
2. Keep my strengths and weaknesses in mind. My strengths include ideation, command, execution, integrity, and perfectionism. Among my many weaknesses are a lack of empathy in some situations, a bad temper, and — inevitably — my perfectionism.

“Only 3.7% of the households and businesses that filed address changes in five Bay Area counties from March to November 2020 left California, a total of 4,264 move outs, according to the data.”
Those pesky facts.
Stop hyping the fake “#California exodus.”…
More uncomfortable facts. Fewer people and businesses moved from all of the Bay Area than to TX than from SF to SD.
More important facts. Nearly as many people and businesses moved from SF to Marin (that low housing cost, no tax, no regulation Mecca) than from all of the Bay Area out of state.

How do you onboard engineers remotely?

Jerie Shaw explains @ShopifyEng's process, and how they made it more effective than in-person onboarding.

Check out the interview:…

Hosted by @FancyKarolina, powered by @codingsans.

#RemoteOnboarding #remotework
Here are some key takeaways:

1. Social isolation

People are sitting at home all day working, so you can’t bet on their forming bonds getting them past the early days in the company. You need to manage energy levels, create opportunities for bonding, and make onboarding useful.
2. Make it flexible

Make your onboarding process modular, so you can keep iterating in small increments. Just like microservices.

Different time zones also require flexibility. Make sure to provide opportunities for facilitated and individual learning whenever possible.

Solid session on 🇮🇳 by @balajis and @naval via @joinClubhouse

Key takeaways... 👇
1/ India will be the biggest beneficiary of the move to #remotework. Three factors driving this: the English-savvy population, willingness for companies out West to hire from a global talent pool, and the large STEM-educated workforce.
2/ India has the potential to become a media superpower. We have Bollywood, the massive audience, the content creators. They foresee India churning out media that isn't uniquely Indian, but one that resonates with global audiences.

Global implementation of #remotework in 2021. These are the challenges we face:
1. Investing in technology and training: a study in Latin America in 2020 (conducted with 815 leaders in the region) found that only 22% of companies work fully remotely. That’s a very poor percentage. More technology investments are needed to shape the future of work.
2. Developing new skills: the @wef predicts that 50% of employees will need retraining by 2025 as technology adoption increases. Furthermore, the main ‘soft competence’ requested is change adaptation.

Even though I haven't been a big fan of Twitter threads so far, a lot of people I know have made 100-tweet threads for @threadapalooza so I thought I'll give it a try as well. I will start with #APIs and hopefully end up connecting them with the #FutureOfWork. Let's go ...

First of all, when I talk about #APIs, I mean HTTP-based interfaces connecting apps and backend servers as well as different services with each other. For now, the technical details, such as whether they use REST, GraphQL, gRPC etc., shall not matter. (1/100)
When humans interact with computers they require a user interface (UI), and when machines interact with each other they need application programming interfaces (APIs). At the end of the day, however, these have to be implemented by humans. Good #APIDesign considers both. (2/100)

The Truth About #OpenOffices
”When the firms switched to open offices, face-to-face interactions fell by 70%.”

#HRM #WorkplaceDesign…
But ”hybrid #openoffice designs are not a panacea. If you are going to let people choose the spaces that best meet their individual needs, your workers might as well be remote.”
And #remotework hinders #communication: ”we found that remote workers communicated nearly 80% less about their assignments than colocated team members did; in 17% of projects they didn’t communicate at all.”

To support remote work, plenty of new SaaS products have come to the party in 2020. The usual suspects highlighted by @G2dotcom in the collaboration/productivity category are not too surprising:

The use of OKR software has been a big part of business continuity initiatives since March 2020 in the enterprise. G2 Digital Trends in Collab...
... Note-taking, screen-sharing & visual collaboration tools have been around for a while now. The WFH transition has simply accelerated the adoption of these cloud tools.

The real transformation in operating models for remote teams is the shift to #OKR software.
