!! HAPPY HALLOWEEN !! 🧙🏼‍♂️

Here’s my green flame pumpkin.

[The science of it in the thread…]
So the burning green liquid I poured into this is essentially:

Methanol + boric acid.

Just mix them up. By a gentle condensation reaction, that makes trimethyl borate:

3CH3OH + H3BO <—> (CH3)3BO3 + 3H20

The methyl borate burns bright green (any methanol burning is colourless)
But for an extra “kick” (and because it bothers me there’s some water left over)…

… I also threw in some Copper(II) Chloride. That makes the solution green, but also adds its own blue-green colour to the flame - giving it a little more spooky anger. 👻
And that’s how it’s done… 🧙🏼‍♂️

THREAD.

While we were in the EU, Our UK govt and the European Court of Justice (ECJ) had many running battles over water & air pollution.

UK govt kept trying to be lazy on pollution. The ECJ kept trying to hold UK govt to cleanliness standards it signed up to.

Some articles...
2009: "[surfers against sewage] has spent the summer highlighting the inadequacies of the UK’s sewerage system, specifically with ... Stormwater Overflow drains (CSOs), culminating in the hard-hitting Panorama programme “Britain’s Dirty Beaches”"

Dear all #FollowBackFriday people,

We need to be building up our own media which can really investigate & expose this govt in ways the MSM just isn't.

For what it's worth, I set up the Bylines Network (@YorksBylines, @NE_Bylines, etc) in partnership with Byline Times as I hugely admired the kind of journalism they were doing... and wanted to recreate that locally all over the UK.

We support each in building community media. ✊ Image
And @BylineTV? Yup, that's part of the community of Byline/Bylines media output too... growing incredibly fast on YouTube where they're developing a strong presence. We help them... and they help us.

I just interviewed Roger Hallam, co-founder of Extinction Rebellion.

Discussing the incident of the Insulate Britain protesters blocking a woman in tears trying to get to a hospital - he says he’d do the same.

… and he would block an ambulance.

/thread
That’s the shock part to get your attention.

This was a full 1h interview in which we thoroughly covered why he would be prepared for, even maybe welcome, protests to cause deaths. He says that happened in civil unrest movements of the past - only extreme levels are effective.
He also discussed how to break the system and remould it around citizen assemblies to make a power dynamic that is effective at bypassing entrenched power and engaging changes needed.

Keep an eye on The London Economic for more content from this interview.

Given that Brexit has so thoroughly screwed the music industry…

…it’s lovely to see this new tradition of European & UK flags together at the Proms really take hold.

🇬🇧 ❤️ 🇪🇺
So apparently this is from 2019 (naughty @EUflagmafia - I just shared your video!)

Video from 2021 is below. There were performances outside the hall & flags inside. I know people who went.

So I’ll try to dig out that stuff. Apologies.

Here’s one of the outside activities:

Agree UK was driven into Brexit cul de sac.

I don’t attribute this to SW1 though.

Mess was started by Vote Leave campaigning with no written prospectus. “Leave SM/CU” was declared late. Messy. Then ERG nutcase pressures. Then Lancaster House speech baked inflexible positions.
For example, after Brexit vote, many of us accepted result (albeit w/ serious misgivings about behaviour in the referendum).

I, for example, wrote academic pieces about how to build UK-EU science after Brexit. Many of us up for discussion & co-work.

Lancaster House killed that.
We’d even been holding meetings about the UK as a “third pillar” (alongside EU & EFTA) within the Single Market- with advice from Norweigen reps.

But all such discussion got rejected out-of-hand by ERG/VL/Govt/BBC.

Felt like they’d won by an inch but felt entitled to miles.
