A Batangas court has quashed the search warrant vs activist Erlindo Baez, spox/prov'l coordinator of Bagong Alyasang Makabayan-Batangas, which led to his arrest on March 7, 2021 due to illegal possession of firearms and explosives. Cases also dismissed.
Search warrants vs Baez were issued by Manila RTC Judge Jason Zapanta. Tanauan RTC found them defective because they failed to specify and sufficiently describe the place to be searched, only indicating the barangay. Zapanta didn't personally examine applicant, witnesses.
In a statement, rights group coalition Karapatan claims the firearms and explosives supposedly recovered from Baez were planted. It calls for immediate release of Baez and Anakpawis-Batangas coordinator Willy Capareño, arrested on March 6 for the same charges.
The raid on Baez’s house took place on March 7, the same day 9 activists were killed during Bloody Sunday.
Justice Sec Menardo Guevarra says the AO 35 special investigating team is ready with 1st report. “Just wait a few more days. We’re just going over it.”
CLARIFICATION: Baez was not in his house when the March 7 raid took place. He was arrested only on October 6 in Sariaya, Quezon by virtue of an arrest warrant in connection with the illegal possession of firearms and explosives cases.

After previously denying Maria Ressa's bid to travel outside the country, the Court of Appeals Eighth Division hearing the appeal to her cyber libel conviction allowed her to travel to the US for a program at Harvard and visit her parents in Florida. How did the court rule?
CA said Ressa was able to prove the necessity and urgency of her travel. The invitation letter from Harvard shows the program requires her physical presence for 30 days. CA also considered humanitarian grounds to allow her to visit her parents whom she had not seen for 2 yrs.
In December last year, the same court had blocked Ressa's bid to visit her ailing mother who was due for an operation, saying she failed to prove the necessity and urgency of her travel.
CA now says denial of previous motions are inconsequential. news.abs-cbn.com/news/12/24/20/…

Following calls from families of drug war victims not included in DOJ's drug war review, SOJ Menardo Guevarra says DOJ now making arrangements with PNP to examine the rest of the 6,000+ drug operations where deaths occurred. Says PNP chief "committed to cooperate."
How many exactly will the DOJ review?
Guevarra: We’ll try to examine as many as we could. It all depends on the manpower resources that we can muster and the extent of cooperation that the PNP will extend to us.
Guevarra on review of thousands of other drug war cases: We may also consider random sampling of cases from all regions. It is possible that certain patterns may be observed without having to examine each and every case file.
