Reading through washingtonpost.com/politics/inter… will share things that jump out for me ...
Article paints devastating picture of domestic intelligence services doing a great job of collecting information, but FBI refusing to act on it. Image
Director Wray appeared too concerned about what then-President Trump thought about him, when he should have been concerned about stopping a coordinated attack on the Capitol. Image
Clearly the federal government has some serious conflicts & problems when the personal orchestrating the attack on US was the US President. Admittedly, an edge case that the government is not very well prepared to handle.
Seems like Capitol Police just had incompetent leadership. "So unprepared was [Cap Police] that some shields, helmets and other crowd-control gear were locked away & 100's of officers were either stationed away from the Capitol or allowed to remain on previously scheduled leave"
T-102 Days: Trump's message at the first debate, "Proud Boys, stand back and stand by.” was received very clearly by future right-wing white-supremist insurrectionists around the country.
T-63 Days: Trump & Family directly inspire "Stop the Steal" and menacing mobs outside of various vote-counting locations in days after election. Assume WaPo is going to paint a very straight line from this moment to the insurrection.
WaPo also noting that @SpeakerPelosi was all over this as early possible, taking Trump's threats both seriously & literally that he would try to steal the election in congress.
T-53 Days: WaPo outlines preliminary confrontations between Trump supporters and police that seem, in hindsight, almost like preparation. Including, taking & holding, Black Lives Matter Plaza for a bit.
T-25 Days: WaPo outlines the December 12 attacks by Proud Boys and Stop the Steal. FBI notes they wore ear pieces & coordinated their attacks, but again they underestimate what this means for future, escalating attacks on US.
WaPo notes that there was not just less attention to *way bigger threat* of domestic right-wing terrorism than foreign attacks, but huge hurdles to conducting investigations. Again, FBI looks super culpable here. Image
FBI hiding behind Free Speech on why it did not bother investigating masses of very specific chatter of an attack on US on January 6 by right-wing terror organizations. Director Wray should be in front of congress tomorrow. Image
T-3 Days: WaPo notes that Trump had a few avenues to steal the election, but his last plan (other than Pence on 1/6) was squashed on 1/3 when his stooge Attorney General threated mass resignations if Georgia was threatened further. Making 1/3 all the more "necessary" for Trump
On 1/5 FBI released a final assessment for 1/6: "The report noted people had shared maps of tunnels underneath Congress, and planned rendezvous spots in the eastern part of the United States to travel together to Washington ...
The [FBI] memo [on 1/5] — like the others before it — was jarringly prescient. But ... cautionary language was a telling example of how the bureau tempered its reaction to threats of violence from White, middle-aged and middle-class Americans."
washingtonpost.com/politics/inter… is powerful read. "Before" paints a damning picture of Trump's directional control and the FBI's willful disregard for mounting evidence of coordinated serious attack on US Capitol on 1/6. Director Wray must answer for mix of disloyalty and/or incompetence

There are Republican governors in: Vermont, Massachusetts, Maryland AND Democratic governors in: Louisiana, Kentucky, Kansas. You are going to see a lot of hot-takes about what Virginia's election means for 2022 & 2024: those hot-takes are worth the paper they are written on.
If you don't believe me, ask Senator McGrath (D-KY) or Senator Boillier (D-KS) who both had near the biggest war chests in their elections, and got walloped.
I do not want to downplay the effect a Republican governor can have on the people of Virginia: in order to be a national figure he will do bad things to the people of Virginia. But, I would not draw the straight lines to the 2022 election that everyone wants to do.

@maggieNYT (1) Democratic communications directors probably do a lot wrong with messaging, but they do not have access to the general population, they have access to hardcore supporters & the mainstream media. The mainstream media selects what they want to amplify to the general population.
(2) Mainstream media *chooses* to focus on the horse-race of getting the bills passed (and palace intrigue around that horse-race), rather than what is in the bills. Same choice for election coverage. Two key reasons for this (2a) they think the horse-races sells better ...
(2b) Mainstream media likes the horse-race, because it is easy to falsely equate the validity of the people policies & people of two parties, if (and only if) you ignore the policies! Impossible to actually showcase policy and not make the Republicans look bad!

Living through it, it is impossible for us to appreciate the insanity of people *choosing relatively high risk of suffering & death* because their political party has decided convincing their supporters to choose unnecessary suffering & death is good for their electoral chances.
"It’s not that they don’t know anyone who has had COVID. Almost everybody here does. They just don’t believe that masks and vaccines are the solution...[Unvaccinated dude] says his support for Trump has nothing to do w/ his decision-making on vaccination" washingtonpost.com/education/2021…
Unvaccinated dude may say his support for Trump is not why his family is unvaccinated & unmasked in the middle of deadly pandemic regularly killing people he knows, but it is the reason: if Republicans were strongly pro-medicine he would be vaccinated & masked.

Same record after 162 games, now 1 game to get to #ALDS, Go @Yankees! Crush @RedSox #BuckyDent #WildCardGame
Feels like a small miracle the @yankees are going into the 7th only down by 3!
It has been a really enjoyable season for @Yankees, but this game is spiraling out 😞

Republicans arguing people trying to engage Senator in bathroom WORSE than armed take-over of Capitol in attempt to murder Vice-President & block transfer of power to Democratic Biden. Republicans demanding bathroom protestors get deported, while insurrectionists not get charged.
People flooding this tweet to mock the severity of the 1/6 insurrection really proves me wrong!
Thoroughly convinced that the folks who want to monitor women's periods, block access to women's healthcare, check genitalia of children to harass them over possible gender fluidity, are super concerned about some random DEM voters confronting DEM senator in the bathroom.

@mattyglesias @DouthatNYT Mainstream media & political elites destroyed Biden for ending Afghanistan War after 20 years and guaranteed that progressives will face same uphill battle when elites drum-up their next poorly considered war, also end to war has not tied to economic & moral soft power we need.
While people & laws have shifted towards civil rights for LGBTQ, Republican courts & politics have shifted hard against minority voting, and women’s rights. And, while larger safety net is super popular & necessary: 0 Republicans are backing Biden policies.
Most critically one issue from early aughts was why/how Supreme Court could hand presidency to dude with less votes & (if they kept counting) less electoral votes, and he could act like he had all the political capital: Assault on fragile democracy has gotten way worse.
