As we await the returns in Virginia, there is one key issue that worked to Youngkin's advantage re: schools and it is NOT "critical race theory." It's the fact that many districts, including Fairfax County Public Schools, remained shut down for the entirety of 2020-21.
Whatever the final results may be, it is time to declare the pandemic effectively over. Child vaccinations are now authorized. Boosters are available to anybody who wants them. There is no justification for any continued mandated NPIs. Not in blue, purple or red localities.
Note that this is NOT a "culture war" issue like CRT is. It's very much a bread-and-butter quality of life matter. It is time that fellow Democrats acknowledge and embrace the end of masks and distancing. This is not for political reasons but because it's the right thing to do.
If this election is the wake-up call needed to nudge blue state/locale PH officials then great. But again, it should have nothing to do with an election. The science has been clear that immunity is the way to go from pandemic to endemic.
But if we want to game this out politically for Dems, declaring an end to restrictions (at schools and elsewhere) will help everybody adjust *economically* to endemicity. That means a more predictable supply chain, labor markets and prices --> sounder economy --> good politics!
The health consideration is the number one reason to do this, however. And I mean both physical and mental health. Again, everybody now has the tools available to protect themselves and their families. Now we can return to better overall health, fitness and sanity.
As for me, my wife and I got the Moderna booster. And we will vaccinate our 6 and 7 year olds. Not because they are at great risk but because I think it's the best way for them to get their antibodies and B & T cells (esp. at the low Pfizer kid dose). And that's it.
