1/ I'm one of several journalists who've been sued regarding tweets around the Covington Catholic/DC mall incident. But this is about more than me, or this lawsuit. It's about a new ideological war on journalism: motherjones.com/media/2021/11/…
2/ I/we don't even know who we're being sued *by*. We have a sense, though, based on who the plaintiff's lawyer is: motherjones.com/media/2021/11/…
3/ This kind of lawsuit is becoming increasingly common, a way to quash reporting, any cripple institutions the plaintiffs and this new class of lawyers see as ideologically opposed to their worldview:
4/ "winning" a case isn't even the goal, in many instances. It's to waste a news organization's time and money with drawn out litigation. When we were sued by Romney's billionaire finance chair, it cost us dearly:
5/ So we won that suit against Frank Vandersloot, but it dragged on for 3.5 years, cost us $400,000 that our libel insurance didn't cover, and our insurance got jacked up as a result. motherjones.com/media/2015/10/…
6/ News organizations are being gutted by hedge funds. They've seen their ad revenue taken by Facebook and Google. And, though you don't hear about it too often, they're facing a ton of lawsuits from rich people driven by ideology or spite or simply to prevent future scrutiny.
7/ So, if you care about @MotherJones, maybe you'll kick in a bit to help us fight back. But regardless, start paying attention to this trend, because a neutered and gutted press allows corruption and authoritarianism to flourish: secure.motherjones.com/flex/mj/key/7L…
8/ PS: Work to pass anti-SLAPP (strategic lawsuit against public participation) statutes, that protect the press and others from frivolous lawsuits that are just designed to burn time and treasure. Now plaintiffs venue shop to avoid states with them. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategic…

Ok I am trying to rewatch The Departed, ostensibly to disabuse myself of the notion that this movie is extremely overrated. 2 min in and Gimme Shelter is underscoring Nicholson chewing scenery idk folks
It’s like Goodfellas’ Bildungsroman, but nowhere near as good!
So many great (or reputed to be great) actors, not exactly that the dialogue is bad, it’s just…tryhard? And also leans way the fuck into the racism in a way that feels pro forma
I don't know anything about running a university, or architecture, but I do know you this is an incredibly bad philanthropic precedent that you should never agree to for any amount of money. independent.com/2021/10/28/arc…
Yeah...two doors for 4,500 people, in an area rocked by fires and earthquakes. Seems smart!
“You talk to older people and they’re like, ‘Dude we sell tomato sauce, we don’t sell politics. Then you have younger people being like, ‘These are political tomatoes. This is political tomato sauce.’” nytimes.com/2021/10/28/bus…
The thing about generational mores and power struggles is everybody, should they live long enough, gets to experience both sides. The Boomers made "never trust anyone over 30" famous. And loved astrology. And tuned in and dropped out and protested and hitchhiked and...
Gen X mocked and confronted our elders too, we just never had any broad cultural power. So wryly watching Gen Z and millennials fight for dominance is perfect for us.
If you won't vote for a development with 1/4th of units set aside for affordable housing to be built on a parking lot near transit, just stop claiming you're for more density.
1/ Last October, @MonikaBauerlein and I reported that Facebook had specifically changed its algorithms to help Brietbart and other far-right outlets, and to throttle traffic to, specifically, @MotherJones... motherjones.com/media/2020/10/…
2/ Ex-employees privy to these decisions told us how Joel Kaplan and other executives at Facebook decided to tip the scales to far-right sites: motherjones.com/media/2020/10/…
Especially against the backdrop of the Baldwin tragedy, the safety and other concerns of IATSE Hollywood set workers makes for vital reading. ✍️ @nlanardmotherjones.com/politics/2021/…
