.@TerryMcAuliffe ran a tireless campaign to move Virginia forward into a brighter future and while we came up short, families across the commonwealth are better off because of his service.
The votes are still being counted in Virginia down ballot races and we will work with those teams to make sure every vote is counted. Make no mistake, we will learn from this election. This is a wake up call. Now it is time to get things done for the American people.
We must deliver upon our promises, while we sharpen our message and define the Republican Party for who and what they represent.
Democrats can't be afraid to call them out, to fight back, and to shine a light on who they are and how they are trying to destroy our democracy. We must be bold. We must stand strong.
We will remain focused on delivering for working families and making the case for the Build Back Better Agenda to the American people. Democrats have a plan to strengthen the middle class and help all Americans get ahead—not just those at the top.
America is worth fighting for. As a party, we have to demonstrate that every day through our message and actions. We will not rest until the polls close next year and we know that Democrats have retained and grown our majorities to continue delivering hope for all.
Our motto in South Carolina is: while I breathe, I hope. With every breath we have, Democrats must defend the hopes, aspirations, and dreams of every American.

I want to take a moment to highlight some incredible Democratic leaders across the country who won and made history yesterday. 🧵
.@wutrain made history as the first woman and first person of color to be elected the mayor of Boston. Wu, the daughter of Taiwanese immigrants, breaks the city’s 199-year streak of electing white, male mayors. An image of newly elected mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu, smil
.@aftabpureval made history by becoming the first Asian American ever elected as mayor of Cincinnati, running to fight for all workers and families in the Queen City. An image of newly elected mayor of Cincinnati, Aftab Pureval

🧵 Folks… sausage making ain’t pretty & sometimes legislating isn’t either. I’ve been in these situations when I ran the whip operation for @WhipClyburn . I learned patience is always the key to victory.

I remember the debate to pass Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Bill. 1/
We whipped the bill for weeks & there were enough no votes to kill the bill. On the morning of the vote we were 17 away from passage & had little hope we could find them. But, we asked Matthew’s mom to come address the caucus. Her heartfelt words transformed defeat to victory. 2/
As we look at these bills, it is important to step back and realize that one party is trying to figure out how to deliver programs to improve the lives of all Americans, and the other party is standing on the sidelines just watching & obstructing. 3/

Thread- I’ll never forget Jan. 6, 2021. None of us should forget. We must make sure it never happens again.

The US Capitol has a special place in my heart. I worked there for years under the tutelage of greats like @WhipClyburn & the late John Lewis. 1/x
Like many, I was jubilant from the Senate wins in GA the night before & the upcoming inauguration of Biden & Harris & Trump departure on Jan 20. In my mind, the certification of electoral votes would have some GOP grumbling but like the past it would simply be a formality. 2/x
America has always set itself apart from other nations because of our peaceful transition of power.

In my lifetime, I saw Al Gore & Hillary Clinton handle suspect losses with tremendous dignity & grace. They recognized that securing American Democracy was always paramount. 3/x

Protecting the voting rights of all Americans & securing our democracy aren’t “Both Sides” concepts. Either you are for or against. We can’t hinge the security of our democracy on the whims of McConnell & crew when they have shown that their priority is power 1st & only. 1/x
There is only one party in this country that has offered over 350+ bills in 48 states to limit & encumber the right to vote for some Americans. There is only one party that is attempting to change the standards by which the courts review elections. 2/x
Across the nation, the GOP is cutting hours of voting; reducing precincts in minority communities; giving partisan legislatures the authority to overturn non-partisan election officials; & criminalizing giving someone a damn bottle of water who is standing in a voting line. 3/x

I want to talk to you tonight about the egregious anti-voter bill we’re seeing in Texas. @JoeBiden just called this part of an assault on democracy. And he’s right. This is Jim Crow 2.0, plain and simple. #SB7
This bill has some of the worst anti-voter measures in the country. What they’ve come up with has got my blood boiling. They want to:
❌ Ban drive-thru voting
❌ Cut back early voting hours
❌ Further clamp down on vote-by-mail rules #SB7
They’re jamming it through on the Saturday night of Memorial Day weekend. If they’re intent on jamming this bill through, I’m intent on making sure we fight back with every breath in our bodies. #SB7

Since we elected @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris, our country has made great strides on the road to recovery, and @TheDemocrats have been working hard to advance their agenda. We rely on grassroots donors to power our work, and I want to explain why your donation matters now.
While we’ve come so far, we can’t let up. That’s why we launched the Democratic Fight Fund, dedicated to electing Democrats to expand our majority in 2021, 2022, and beyond. It will empower state parties and campaigns to fight for every seat, not just historically blue ones.
We are making historic investments in state parties and grassroots infrastructure—which is a big deal for the committee during an off year. It will ensure we can keep building the organization and programs that will support our candidates the moment their general elections begin.
