We are about to get underway at the North Florida Safe Streets Summit! #NFLSafeStreets21
🏙️➡️🌊 This morning's Core to Coast Projects panel is moderated by Fred Jones, @NeptuneBeach3 vice mayor and Planning Practice Lead at @MBakerIntl. #NFLSafeStreets21.
First up: @DenMarkSor of @ECGreenway. "No infrastructure project in the country has more visits" than the greenway. "It's active, equitable transportation."
.@DenMarkSor presents the vision for @ECGreenway in #Jacksonville, including a #dtjax connector. #ilovejax #NFLSafeStreets21
Ways to support @ECGreenway in our community and across the East Coast. #NFLSafeStreets21
Lori Boyer from @CityofJax Downtown Investment Authority: It wasn't necessarily typical for @ECGreenway to connect to a downtown area, but we appreciate them working with the city to make sure #dtjax is included. #NFLSafeStreets21
Boyer: A survey of the transformational multi-modal projects planned and underway in #dtjax. #NFLSafeStreets21
.@CMJoyceMorgan: Efforts to implement safe streets best practices in her district includes a #completestreets project along Arlington Road.
The @ECGreenway segment in @CMJoyceMorgan's district will connect Greenway users to @jaxparks sites as well. #NFLSafeStreets21
.@JTAFLA is implementing a new, safer roundabout design in @CMJoyceMorgan's district as well.
The recently passed local option gas tax funding will help fund a safety solution for one challenging roadway in @CMJoyceMorgan's district. #NFLSafeStreets21
.@Penalosa_G: During COVID, fewer cars on the road led to a visible improvement in environmental quality and showed us what is possible if we reduce our reliance on car-based infrastructure. #NFLSafeStreets21
.@Penalosa_G asks: how do you want Florida's communities to become? Notes change is hard, because you face CAVE People (Citizens Against Virtually Everything). #NFLSafeStreets21
.@Penalosa_G: Streets are *public* spaces. They belong to everyone. Open streets are an equalizer, and quality spaces confer safety and dignity on residents.
@Penalosa_G .@Penalosa_G's 8 80 Rule:
1. Consider what 8-year-old residents need.
2. Consider what 80-year-old residents need.
3. Build a city that meets the needs of both groups. If it is safe enough for both of them, it is safe enough for everyone.
.@Penalosa_G: During COVID, we saw how public willpower transformed spaces in our cities to make them more publicly accessible: street lanes into bike lanes, golf courses into public parks, etc.
.@penalosa_G: When you look at Jacksonville from the sky, streets make up such a large percentage of what we see in the landscape. Surely a portion of that can be allocated so that it is available as a public space. #NFLSafeStreets21
Every trip begins and ends WALKING. Just like birds fly, people walk, and it should be safe to walk throughout our communities. The goals of safe streets are compatible with reducing climate change and #COP26. #NFLSafeStreets
The two essential elements to increase bicycling in your city:
1. Reduce the speed on ALL streets.
2. Create a NETWORK of protected bikeways.
#NFLSafeStreets21
.@Penalosa_G: The priority of #safestreets is the most vulnerable among us. The children, the elderly, and the poor -- let's evaluate our cities by determining how we treat vulnerable communities.
If you could experience a city from the perspective of someone who is 3 ft tall, a 3-yr-old, what would you change? #NFLSafeStreets21
About to welcome @ctbrown1911 to the stage to moderate our #transportation #equity panel. #arrestedmobility #NFLSafeStreets21
Pedestrian deaths are significantly higher among specific disadvantaged groups -- older adults, people of color, and people in low-income neighborhoods. #NFLSafeStreets21 #arrestedmobility
.@ctbrown1911 recommends actions we can take to center equity in our #transportation systems. #arrestedmobility
1. Commit to equity through the adoption of a racial equity action plan.
2. Prioritize investments and maintenance in minority and low-income communities. /1
Kay Ehas of #GroundworkJax brings up an update on the Emerald Trail and shows a few of the projected outcomes from the restoration of McCoys Creek. #NFLStreets21 #NFLSafeStreets21
As a result of resident feedback from the neighborhood, #GroundworkJax developed the CREST program to help neighbors be better custodians of McCoys Creek.
This visioning process is intended to prevent existing residents from being displaced once the area benefits from Emerald Trail and the McCoys Creek restoration. #GroundworkJax
Residents are also being trained as Emerald Trail stewards. #GroundworkJax #NFLSafeStreets21
3. Ensure the full and fair participation of racialized minority groups.
4. Foster more equitable treatment of diverse languages in the public space.
5. Document and increase mobility and access for the elderly and persons with disabilities. /2
6. Engage with women and female-headed households to deepen understanding of behavior and usage differences.
7. Engage with foreign-born populations to deepen understanding of behavior and usage differences. /3
8. Evaluate and mitigate the unintended consequences of improved mobility and access as the result of gentrification and displacement.
9. Analyze the impact of past and current racialized zoning and land use decisions. /4
10. Safeguard against discriminatory law enforcement and over-policing.
11. Challenge and eliminate the "scary black male" narrative.
12. Collect and analyze disaggregated data on Black lives and experiences. /5
13. Advocate for the penalization of race-based 911 calls.
14. Organize efforts to decriminalize jaywalking across the country.
15. Organize efforts to decriminalize bicycling in low-income and BIPOC communities. /6
BONUS: In "bicycle-friendly" communities and "strong" towns, it is time to challenge what it means to be friendly or strong and yet inequitable and exclusive. /7 #NFLSafeStreets21
Atlantic Beach @ellenglasser4ab says the 2017 pedestrian death of Hunter Cope as he crossed Mayport Rd. on his way to school is one of the things that motivated her to run for mayor.
.@ellenglasser4ab encourages attendees to consider #safestreets components as "puzzle pieces" and determine what pieces are still needed to make their city a safe place for all residents and visitors. #NFLSafeStreets21
.@ellenglasser4ab says Atlantic Beach sought grant funding to widen this sidewalk along the north-south of Atlantic Beach in order to make it safer for kids to walk to school. #NFLSafeStreets21
.@ellenglasser4ab: Acknowledging and bridging the community divides created by the Mayport Road "edge" in the City of Atlantic Beach is an important element of our Vision 2040 planning. #NFLSafeStreets21
