Parsha Toldot is really a drama between two brothers and allegorically between two peoples and two approaches to defining civilization and it is a story that is repeated throughout history. 1)
There are lots of interpretations of the relationship between Jacob and Esau. One can look simply at the history as illuminated by the archeological evidence. One can interpret the story as Christians have since the writings of Paul.
2)
One can interpret it as the struggle between Jews and Rome as did our sages in the Jerusalem Talmud whose more recent history was filled with that ideological and physical conflict.
3)
The most believable interpretations, in my opinion, are those of our Sages, because while they may have tried to explain things in terms of their more recent history, they knew the language, the metaphoric nature of Hebrew,
4)
and would have been aware of the meanings beneath the surface comparisons.
Here we have two sons, twins. Jacob and Esau. We are not told whether identical or fraternal twins but we are told how their interests diverged and a bit about their characters.
5)
It is that divergence that is significant. Each of these sons, represented a different cultural view, an different approach to perceiving the reality of what civilization should be, & it illustrates how these concepts, these approaches, conflict, & how they have to co-exist.
6)
But what should be interesting to us today, is that “struggle” is still with us today, still part of our reality.
7)
Esau was associated with Rome by our Sages because Rome was about power, an attitude that the ends justified the means, that dissent from Roman power was bad in itself, even dangerous, and had to be punished even by the most violent means.
8)
Rome during that era was exploitative, manipulative and devoid of humaneness and empathy. The powerful controlled the weak, and having power and using it was associated with being blessed by the gods.
9)
Christianity adopted this attitude when it co-opted the Roman Empire, and used belief, controlled from the top as a tool in enforcing conformity and squashing dissent, and demonizing all those who did dissent.
10)
Esau was about a society controlled from the top, by the powerful and wealthy, about the power of the bully, and of the government that enforces its rule by violence or coersion.
11)
Jacob was Yisrael, in contrast, was about individual responsibility, humaneness, empathy, deferred gratification for a better future, contemplative, education oriented, & moral judgment & behavior as what made a person of value and respect, and not just power and expediency.
12)
Jacob was about a society of personal responsibility, people treating one another fairly, and, frankly, personal liberty, all relating to G-d through proper behavior, rather than be subject to the whims of the gods.
13)
And look at the world today. Nothing has really changed, has it. Esau is still trying to control the world, to enforce his will, to discourage dissent, whether it is the Nazis in the 1930’s to 40’s, or the Communists in almost the whole of the 20th century,
14)
or the attitudes in the European Union or on the Left worldwide, power, control, a lack of tolerance toward diversity, all the hallmarks of Esau are still there.
15)
And then there is still Jacob.Surviving intact, not without problems, 3600 years later, teach your children, take care of one another, resist assimilation and conformity, Torah, personal responsibility, relating to G-d by behavior, not just belief.
16)
And just as with Jacob and Esau, both need to find a way to coexist, especially in a shrinking world of fast travel and mass communication,
17)
Think about it. But this Parsha goes further. It makes clear in a way that Jacob (Am Yisrael) must be proactive and maintain its special, and unique identity, its ways, its culture, its standards, or lose and be dominated by Esau. That is the key to the Parsha.
18)
My advice. Read it, in the original preferably, and think about it."
19)
PARSHAT KI TAVO, like much of Torah, operates on several levels. 1)
On one level, the literal surface, it gives instructions, but then looks deeper & it communicates how the performance of Mitzvoth creates sociological & psychological civilizing & humanizing consequences in the creation & continuation of a moral nation & relates to HaShem.
2)
Moses instructs the people of Israel: When you enter the land that G‑d is giving to you as your eternal heritage, & you settle it & cultivate it, bring the first-ripened fruits (bikkurim) of your orchard to the Holy Temple,

Paul Gherkin wrote, "The New York Times is attempting to rewrite history that Jews are responsible for war, a smear promoted in the infamous forgery Protocols of the Elders of Zion and in the HAMAS Charter. It is a vile tactic which anti-Semites have used for a long time.
2)
That the Times would specifically do it on the anniversary of the 1929 Hebron Massacre marks its editors as cruel sadists as well."

Roger Froikin @rlefraim wrote, "INTERESTING NEWS ITEM TODAY -- THAT THERE ARE MANY ON THE LEFT IN THE USA, INCLUDING A NUMBER OF CONGRESSMEN AND LOCAL OFFICIALS WHO BELIEVE
THAT THE US FLAG IS "PROVOCATIVE AND DISTURBING AND A CAUSE FOR SOCIAL DISSENSION"
1)
I can imagine that there are some countries where the national flag emphasizes the history and interest of one group while excluding other citizens and that this could be a problem to some degree.
2)
A flag with a Cross, representing Christianity, could be seen by non-Christian citizens as being exclusionary, for example.
But there is nothing in the US Flag that represents any one group of citizens,

Roger Froikin @rlefraim wrote, "VP KAMALA HARRIS AND PRES JOE BIDEN ACT AS IF THE REASONS FOR MASS ILLEGAL MIGRATION NEEDS EXTENSIVE STUDY INTO THE FUNDEMENTAL UNDERLYING CAUSES.
1)
So, they will assemble long lists of experts. Reams of papers will be produced. A lot of time will go by while illegal migrant populations grow and along with them, crime, human trafficking, illegal drugs, gang activity and worse long term.
2)
BUT THE UNDERLYING ISSUES ARE SIMPLE. ONE DOES NOT NEED A CREW OF COLLEGE PROFESSORS EAGER TO GET FEDERAL GRANTS TO TELL US.
HERE ARE THE UNDERLYING CAUSES OF ILLEGAL MIGRATION:
1. A REFUSAL OF THE US GOVERNMENT TO ENFORCE IMMIGRATION LAWS THAT ARE ALREADY ON THE BOOKS.

Roger Froikin wrote, "BEFORE YOU CELEBRATE THE JOBS REPORT (IN THE USA), CONSIDER SOME FACTS.
1. OF THE 800,000 PLUS JOBS ADDED TO THE ECONOMY, ALMOST 240,000 WERE GOVERNMENT JOBS.
1)
These jobs were Government rehiring furloughed workers and/or adding 1000's to the regulatory bureaucracy. Not productive jobs creating products or services.
2. THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE ALSO INCREASED.
2)
3. ECONOMIC GROWTH IS BEING TALKED ABOUT AND CELEBRATED. BUT THINK FOR A MOMENT. THE ECONOMY IS SMALLER THAN IT WAS PRE-COVID. IT SHRUNK, AND NOW IT IS REBOUNDING, BUT WE STILL LOST TIME AND VALUE - A LOT OF TIME AND VALUE.
