Genesis 28:10–32:3
Jacob leaves BeerSheva and travels to north Haran (SE Turkey today), the area his ancestors came from originally 1)
On the way, he rests, someplace near the location of Beit El today, and sleeps there. He has a dream, a dream of ladders connecting Earth with something above, and “melachim” (translated traditionally as “angels”) climbing up and down what appeared as ladders.
2)
And as part of the dream, HaShem promises Jacob all the land around him would be for his descendants forever. In the morning, Jacob builds a monument and promises it would be a special place for HaShem.
3)
Now, there are all sorts of commentaries written about this passage. What were the angels? What happens to that location? I’m not sure any of that matters as much as the promise that the land, all the land, not just one city purchased by Avraham,
4)
would be the inheritance for Am Yisrael forever. This was a change. Before that, rights came from purchasing. Now rights come from a promise and a promise specifically to Am Yisrael and not for all the descendants of Abraham. I think that is the core of the passage.
5)
But, this passage can lead to all sorts of speculation. Who were the angels, and what were the ladders? An old friend of mine in Israel who died several years ago, used to present an argument of aliens and spacecraft from the description of the dream,
6)
noting the linguistic similarity in Hebrew between the term for “angels” and the term for “sailers” on ships at sea possibly meaning travelers on ships through space.
7)
And if Beit El was the location dedicated by Jacob to HaShem should that not be the location of the Temple and the center of spiritual devotion for Jews, rather than Jerusalem which David chose 700 or more years later for political purposes? Something to think about.
8)
The remainder of the Parsha is the story of Jacob and Laban and Laban’s daughters and the growth of Jacob’s family and wealth and finally his departure, after 20 years in Haran, to return home with wives and children from his own ancestral area and culture.
9)
There are two specific lessons here. Two very important lessons.
First, to Jacob, it was important to carry his own culture and its values rather than to blend in and assimilate in the culture of many residents of Cana’an and he made an enormous effort to do so.
10)
Imagine what would be had Jacob not made that effort. One thing, there would have been no slavery in Egypt, no exodus, no Torah, and no Jewish nation, and we never would have heard of him. So, this parsha’s story has a lesson that is generally ignored when telling the story.
11)
It is a lesson about the lengths that sometimes must be taken to preserve cultural integrity and prevent assimilation and disappearance of identity.
Second, this is the first time in human history, where a specific territory became associated with a specific nation.
12)
It is, possibly, the first mention in history of a nation-state concept. Eretz Yisrael promised to Yisrael. This is the beginnings of Zionism. Not in the 19th century, but 3700 years ago at Beit El.

1)
TWO FACTS ABOUT "EXPERTS"
(1). I can find more than 17 university-based economists who are outright Marxists, who will say almost anything in support of autocratic policies. Remember Al Gores 3000 Climate scientists, hat dwindled down to about 7 over the years.
2)
Frankly, the economists on the Tax Commissions and the Congressional Budget Office seem to think that taxes will increase for almost everyone, meaning Biden and Company are lying.

WEDNESDAY THIS WEEK, THOUGH IGNORED BY THE US MEDIA
HOUTI FORCES STORMED THE US EMBASSY IN YEMIN, TAKING ALL PERSONNEL HOSTAGE, EVENTUALLY RELEASING AMERICANS TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY BUT KEEPING YEMINITE US EMPLOYEES HOSTAGE.
2)
I guess the Houti movement is taking their direction from the Iran Government - some of the same people who took the US Embassy in Teheran years ago.
And what is the response from the Biden White House ---- can you hear the crickets chirping."

This is a statement of principle. Florida is part of the United States of America and the language that unites us is the English language.

Yet, lately I have noticed Billboards solely in Spanish, and in the past couple weeks, Spanish language ads on TV, on networks that are not Spanish language networks.
I am not against Spanish. I am not one of those who know only English.
Yo Puedo hablar en espanol.
2)
But, when there is a Billboard or a sign in Spanish, it should also include English, and TV Ads should be English or biligual, not just in Spanish.
What will it take to convince people that part of what makes a nation work is a common language, & in this case it is English."

I really would like to question this Congressman because when one makes an accusation, the burden of proof is on the accuser, and frankly, his assumptions are not proof.
3)
Parsha Toldot is really a drama between two brothers and allegorically between two peoples and two approaches to defining civilization and it is a story that is repeated throughout history. 1)
There are lots of interpretations of the relationship between Jacob and Esau. One can look simply at the history as illuminated by the archeological evidence. One can interpret the story as Christians have since the writings of Paul.
2)
One can interpret it as the struggle between Jews and Rome as did our sages in the Jerusalem Talmud whose more recent history was filled with that ideological and physical conflict.

PARSHAT KI TAVO, like much of Torah, operates on several levels. 1)
On one level, the literal surface, it gives instructions, but then looks deeper & it communicates how the performance of Mitzvoth creates sociological & psychological civilizing & humanizing consequences in the creation & continuation of a moral nation & relates to HaShem.
2)
Moses instructs the people of Israel: When you enter the land that G‑d is giving to you as your eternal heritage, & you settle it & cultivate it, bring the first-ripened fruits (bikkurim) of your orchard to the Holy Temple,
