Even if:
• You’ve never been on a sales call
• You never cold DMed
• You don’t have a portfolio
• You’re not sure you’re good enough
• You don’t know what service to offer
>>> A Thread 🧵 <<<
I get this question all the time.
And although it seems complicated… the answer is actually very straightforward.
But in order to understand my answer…
You need to understand your potential client.
In order to do that?
You need to understand HOW to decide who it is.
👇
So let’s start off with WHO your potential client is when you’re just starting out.
Anyone who needs copywriting services…
But…
Ones that can be measured.
Meaning? Not “about us” pages on a website etc.
Now… what options are left?
• Ads
• Sales pages
• Emails
• Tweets
I might’ve missed some. But you get the idea.
Now…
Here’s the second thing you need to understand:
You CAN NOT charge money when you’re a nobody with no portfolio and no social proof.
Accept that.
But there’s a trick you can use:
I will teach you how to make money either way.
But before I do…
Understand this last thing:
You writing copy for free - is actually not free for your client.
Weird right?
Lemme explain:
If you write a sales page for a client… you’ll drill his brain. And he knows it. Why?
Because you’ll need material.
Answers.
Photos.
Etc.
So…
Your prospect knows that taking you for free is more risk for him than it is for you.
But it gets worse.
Let’s say you built a sales page. Bravo! Now what?
Now your prospect has to launch it.
BIG PROBLEM.
Here’s why:
You’re either gonna cost him money (ads)…
Or you’re gonna cost him “opportunity cost” if he launches it to his list or Twitter account.
Why?
Because some people might unsubscribe.
Or not buy.
And they might never click on that link again after the first negative experience.
So remember this: you’re the risk.
Your “free” is actually very expensive for your prospect.
And he knows it.
So what we need to do is three things: 1. Choose the minimal risk medium 2. Show the prospect some safety 3. Minimize the prospect’s risk.
How do you do that?
1. Choose the minimal risk medium
In my eyes?
Either emails or tweets.
Why?
Easiest to deliver.
Lowest risk.
Although there’s still some risk.
He could send the email and have a lot of his list unsubscribe.
Or tweets? People could unfollow.
This is where step two comes in:
2. Show the prospect some safety
If you’re gonna cold DM on Twitter (and you should)…
You have to have a buttload of content on your TL about copywriting.
That’s your portfolio.
Just like I’m doing.
Do you think if I cold DM people they won’t let me write an email for free?
Of course they would.
Because I’m not as much a risk thanks to my TL.
Which leads us to number three:
3. Minimize the prospect’s risk
How do you do that?
Two ways:
Way one: instead of writing one email or one tweet… write 3-5. For free.
This will allow the prospect to CHOOSE what he likes instead of giving you a yes/no answer.
And the second way?
Way two: tell him that he DOESN’T have to use your emails or tweets.
This lowers the risk so much that your prospect will think…
“What do I have to lose? Fine let’s let him do that. Why not?”
And you just got a free client.
And let me be honest:
Some will not use your materials.
Some will not even answer after you send them your material.
But some will.
And the way to look it at is this:
You’re practicing.
Even if you wrote 3 emails for 5 clients each…
That’s 15 emails.
You got a million timer better! And…
Here’s the sweet part:
If you’re good…
Some of those will offer to pay you for more emails or tweets.
And then…
You can use their case studies on your TL.
This will make acquiring the 2nd or 3rd client so much easier.
But it gets even better:
If you continue doing that…
At some point…
One of your clients will decide to ask you if you can write more things for them.
• Ads
• Sales pages
• Launches
Etc…
This is where you win!
You will finally start being a real-life copywriter who gets PAID for his skills.
And…
You will continue sharing your knowledge and results on your TL…
Until…
You will be branded as “the copywriting guy who works with the big accounts on Twitter”.
Once you get there?
People will start cold DMing you to pay you money.
I mean it.
Let’s recap:
• Cold DM clients
• Minimize their risk
• Work for free
• Get your first client
• Share it on your TL
• Get the next clients easy
• Keep sharing on TL
• Start getting paid
• Brand yourself
• Start having people DM you
• BONUS: raise your prices
