1/ The Model —
High numbers of channels/messages and a shameless willingness to disseminate partial truths or outright fictions: New Russian propaganda entertains, confuses and overwhelms the audience. rand.org/pubs/perspecti…
2/ Sputnik —
"Its mission wasn’t really to report the news as much as it was to push a narrative that would either sow doubts about situations that weren’t flattering to Russia or its allies, or hurt the reputation of the United States and its allies."
3/ Sputnik —
"Stanton said he initially took the job at Sputnik because of his interest in Russia and because he needed the paycheck. He said he only started believing that Sputnik was a propaganda site after about a month of working there."
4/ Redfish Media —
5 of 9 employees publicly associated with Redfish last worked at a Russian state media outlet; @RaniaKhalek, a frequent commentator on Sputnik and RT, announced in Nov 2017 that she had accepted a job as a correspondent for Redfish.
5/ Callback to the first article on the Russian model —
"Its tools and channels now include the Internet, social media, and the evolving landscape of professional and amateur journalism and media outlets."
7/ Is it any surprise then, that a certain circle of "independent journalists," platformed and bankrolled by Russian state media or its subsidiaries are now serving as the propaganda arm of the GoE?
8/ At the risk of sounding like a Cold War conspiracist, Russia's only interest here is countering American talking points. Hence their narrative about Syria. Or Crimea. And now Ethiopia.
And for that cause, the truth (and people) are the tragic casualties.
9/ Remember the model —
"Russian propagandists do not need to wait to check facts or verify claims; they just disseminate an interpretation of emergent events that appears to best favor their themes and objectives."
10/
I expect @BTnewsroom's tone on the BJP and Kashmir will change too, if the US ever really pushed back on Modi's #Hindutva fascism.
11/ Back to the model —
"First, people are often cognitively lazy. Second, people are often poor at discriminating true information from false information—or remembering that they have done so previously."
12/ @EugenePuryear and his host station Radio Sputnik —
"Radio Sputnik is part of Rossíya Segódnya, the government news agency created in 2013 by Russian President Vladimir Putin."
13/ Recap: Distinctive Features of the Contemporary Model for Russian Propaganda —
- High-volume and multichannel
- Rapid, continuous, and repetitive
- Lacks commitment to objective reality
- Lacks commitment to consistency.
18/ By the way, Eugene, “Because they want unity” is at least one order of magnitude higher than “Because they hate our freedom” on the bullshit meter.
Maybe your comrades will translate this for you: Смотри́ на него́, врёт и не красне́ет

You see this? This is language that is bereft of accountability and ownership. It is not the language of leadership. It’s the hollow rhetoric of evangelism. Please, #NoMore bullshit, @AbiyAhmedAli
This is language that demands the harshest and most difficult sacrifices from citizens. But @AbiyAhmedAli gets to sacrifice nothing. He concedes nothing. Absolutely nothing. Peak megalomania.
This is the language of prosperity gospel preachers who amass and retain unimaginable wealth and power at the expense of their gullible congregation.

A visual thread of how @AbiyAhmedAli's loyal accomplices and cabinet members looked at him while he lied non-stop for more than thirty minutes today.

For the people who are busy conjuring conspiracies about how #TigrayGenocide appeared so soon after Nov 4 2020 —
01/ In 2018, these TV personalities were very clear about the horrifying implications of "የቀን ጅብ" as dehumanizing language (~48m)
02/
Anybody who has studied language and violence understands this: dehumanizing language is an early indicator of oncoming violence.
And any sane and historically literate person would have seen what was coming as soon as it was obvious that "የቀን ጅብ" would go unchecked.
03/
Yes, the folks on the TV show were too cautious how they tiptoe around stating the obvious; and their criticism is a little too lukewarm for my liking, especially about Abiy's መደመር garbage and his rabid cult following.
"It's a precedent-setting case. It's the first time that level of human rights abuse has been brought before a Canadian court for the activities of a Canadian extractives company overseas."

THE 2017 OPINION THAT GETS PARADED AROUND AS FACT:
1/ By now, everyone must be sick and tired of hearing the "TPLF stole $30Billion + USA gave $30Billion in aid" story. PFDJ bootlickers and the cute-and-clevers are particularly fond of this story:
2/ If it the numbers and phrasing seem questionably convenient, it's because they are.
They are from a 2017 opinion piece by a David Steinman in the "Capital Flows" opinion column of Forbes.
"Capital Flows" hasn't published new pieces since Jan 2018.
