I have talked about my Swabian heritage before and how German is my first second language.
Many people back home don't realize the gap between Swabian and German, they treat it as a dialect. But it isn't! It is a whole world!
When I think about my mother tongue, German isn't my mother tongue.
German was and is the language I get corrected in, the language that puts me down!
Swabian, my mother tongue, the language of my mother lifts me up and grounds me. It is the language I belong in!
This has become more and more clear to me, the more I am away from home. It became obvious when I tried to translate Fog Spirit of Federsee from English - the language my life happens in - to German. It was difficult, hard and it made me uneasy.
Many times, I had to think how I spoke when I was in university, when I fell back to the inter-german lingua franca.
This is when I realized that English has become closer to me than German.
But when I call home, call my parents and siblings, Swabian just flows from me naturally. I don't have to think, I'm in tune!
After Fog Spirit of Federsee, I have made more games that connect me to my hometown and heritage: Mariann: Soul Detective and recently Clean-Up Crew.
Making these games helped me connect with my roots and they are personal artefacts I love to share with the world!

This is exactly what the interactive Intro Mission in Clean-Up Crew starts like! Sombre, tranquil, but with a foreshadowing of something dark and ghostly!
