At the @DarkHorseComics panel feat. @ZackDavisson & Carl Horn!
Giving a history of Dark Horse’s relationship with publishing manga. Dark Horse started doing manga in 88, Viz was founded just a year before in 87. Contrary to what some younger fans may think, Manga localization was happening before the internet!
A sample of Dark Horse’s early manga floppies.
Dark Horse comics are even sold in Akihaibara!
Adam Warren’s adaptations of Dirty Pair and Bubblegum Crisis. His current series Empowered is a great blend of manga and western superhero comic influences! This sample page features guest art by Tomoko Saito, who also retouched Blade of the Inmortal!
Japanese Shonen Jump vs western comics Previews sampler size comparison.
Carl wanted to hire Anthony about drain to write an intro for Miss Koizumi Loves Ramen Noodles, but he passed away before he could ask. 😅
Some modern comics and their manga influences! Wendy Pini may’ve been the first manga-inspired American comics artist!
1983’s YamatoCon was probably the first anime con. Even before that, Nagai and Tezuka were guests at SDCC in 1980. Nagai is planning to write a manga about that experience soon! Anime and manga has had a long, historied international fandom.
Viz Comics’ original slogan was “Comics bigger than Rock ‘n’ Roll”
The back and forth of Dark Horse’s manga licensing.
Shigeru Mizuki loved Hellboy and Japanese editions of the series contain forwards by him. Mizuki loved western comic books in general, EC comics and stuff like Superman and Plastic Man were huge influences on him.
American comics have influenced manga for a long time. Lupin III creator Monkey Punch once said that “Mad Magazine was the REAL manga” 🤣
Samples of the Japanese localization of Hellboy and Umbrella Academy.
Hiroyuki Imaishi’s Umbrella Academy doujinshi. Imaishi is also a huge fan of American comics and has even organized meetups in Japan.
Comparisons of Dark Horse’s release of Lone Wolf and Cub.
The original pages of the final chapter of the series used for the Gallery Edition. These original pages are worth $1 million dollars. Lone Wolf and Cub is a bestseller, boasting 1.5 million copies sold. Gallery Edition will also have color pages.
Dark Horse’s Danganronpa books!
Dark Horse’s release of the Yoshitaka Amano-illustrated book compiling Tale of Genji and other folk stories.
Apparently some early translations of Japanese media would translate samurai as knights, Yokai as fairies, and ninja as magicians! 🤣
Dark Horse’s Vampire Hunter D novel omnibus.
Blade of the Immortal was the first comic DH published in American comics format because of the strong support it had from American comics fans.
Mob Psycho 100 may be Dark Horse’s only pure shonen title. It’s great because it proves the strength of great storytelling over aesthetic.
Berserk, DH’s best selling title. Plans for their release of volume 41 are underway.
The much lauded Eizouken, named by the NYT and other publications as one of the best tv shows of 2020. The manga is an intensive localization effort because of all its text and detail.
Eizouken volume 4 is coming out soon and will continue the story past the anime. It will introduce the Anime club, the rivals of the Animation club, who are all modeled after famous anime directors!
Giveaway time! This is done lottery style… but I wasn’t given a ticket a ticket when I went in the room. 😭

What is localization! The word itself is superfluous, but without localizers you don’t read manga in English! It is a translator who writes the phrases we latch onto and assign meaning to.
