The 287(g) program is a dream for Trumpists: the intersection of discriminatory policing and anti-immigrant persecution.
Trump widely expanded the program--and expanded the ability of local sheriffs to abuse immigrants.
Joe Biden promised to end these contracts when he was a candidate.
But as president...him and @SecMayorkas haven't kept their word.
Which means they're forcing immigrants to contend with life under the program--even though they could immediately cancel the entire 287(g) program TODAY.
“If you think he’s illegal, we can make him disappear.”
Yesterday the Washington Post released a bombshell report on Trump's ICE contracts. What they uncovered is horrifying, and absolutely worth reading in full.
1. The police departments who've partnered with ICE through these contracts are the worst of the worst.
Joe Arpaio loves the 287(g) program. Sheriff Terry Johnson does too, because he thinks Mexican's "values are a lot different — their morals — than what we have here.”
2. These contracts don’t just lead to immigrants being torn from their family. They also create a climate of fear, terrorizing entire communities.
Every trip outside the house becomes a nightmare: “The moment I put the keys in the engine, I’m risking not seeing my mama anymore.”
❌ The CDC concluded there was no public health reason for banning & expelling immigrants
⛔️ Pence pressured the CDC to start Title 42 anyway to stop immigration.
New testimony in congress shows that a CDC agency head refused to sign the order because it was clear this was just an anti-immigrant power grab. coronavirus.house.gov/sites/democrat…
The Biden administration is simply continuing Trump policy but refusing to admit it's for Trump reasons. But the evidence is clearer every day. thehill.com/policy/healthc…
We can't accept another day of Trump's immigration policies.
The images from the border, the terror that immigrants still feel in our communities - it has to stop.
That's why we're at DHS headquarters, shutting down every gate, telling Biden's admin to #KeepYourPromises
Biden promised to dismantle Trump's cruel immigration system, and replace it with one that's "fair and humane."
Instead, his admin is doubling down on one of Trump’s main tactics: using fear and suffering to try to keep immigrants out.
It’s exactly what we all voted against.
We’re at DHS to ask Secretary Mayorkas a simple question: are you going to #KeepYourPromises and cancel Trump’s border policy & Trump’s ICE contracts? Or will you embrace the racist anti-immigrant agenda you were elected to fix?
*record scratch* *freeze frame* yup that’s me. you’re probably wondering how i ended up in this situation.
Honestly though, there's not much to wonder about? We freaked white people out about immigrants and used voter suppression to keep everyone else from voting, it's not rocket science.
I'm honestly surprised it worked though. My colleagues kept saying the quiet parts loud: "Everybody shouldn't be voting", "immigration is how we're going to win", that kind of thing.
