EXTRAORDINARY PUSHBACK BY INDIA ON COP26 PRESSURE TACTICS -- PM Modi refers to attempts to hijack the climate agenda by the "colonial mindset". @bforboseman @nit_set @n_thanki @chilledasad100 @JMauskar @KevinClimate @doreenstabinsky @TheBTI @vijramachandran @3rdworldnetwork
See video available at (regrettably only in Hindi without translation) - from 1:09:00 to 1:16:00 -significant even for the length of the intervention on the importance of development for India.
The speech notes that the developed world has emitted about 15 times more than India in absolute and per capita cumulative emissions (from 1850 till today). Also notes that US + EU have emitted 11 times more in absolute cumulative and 20 more in per capita cumulative emissions.
Details India's numerous mitigation actions and leading role in deploying renewable energy. Refers to India (rightly) as the leading country among G20 in policies and actions that are compatible to Paris Agreement targets.
"And yet, in the name of the environment, various pressures are created on India. All this is the result of colonial mentality." A powerful echo of other LMDC friends, led by Bolivia, who speaking for the group at #COP26, referred to "carbon colonialism."
Extraordinary plain-speak in the history of international climate politics. A mark of how strongly India feels on the pressure tactics such as those resorted to at #COP26. And delivered on Constitution Day, a highly significant occasion.
When India uses this language at the highest level, the C word never before used in this context, developed countries must see that they have crossed a critical red line of mutual trust and good faith at the #COP26 closing.
Clear message that targeting of this kind will not be taken lightly, after India delivered reassurance and more than its fair share in good faith at the very outset of #COP26, from the highest levels.
A serious breach of faith also by the UK Presidency, after India bolstered the relevance of #COP26 by the PM's personal presence and message, despite the non-show of other leaders. Assuring the Presidency of India's support to its efforts.
PM Modi's sharp message to the developed countries on this issue will strike a chord across the political spectrum in this country and will draw widespread concurrence.

WHAT HAPPENED AT COP26? ASSESSMENTS AND REFLECTIONS -- FULL TALK NOW AVAILABLE ON THE MSSRF YOUTUBE CHANNEL.

Some highlights from the talk:
COP26 was India's COP in 3 important ways. First, PM Modi's announcements at the start that reassured the world. And laid a challenge before the developed world to match the mitigation ambition of developing countries with ambition in finance. 2/n
Second, India was a key player in finalising the Paris Rulebook in a spirit of compromise while providing full support to the fight of colleagues of G77+China on adaptation and loss and damage. 3/n

CATCHING A NARRATIVE IN THE MAKING.
First step -- Glasgow becomes a third person actor extraneous to countries. Glasgow decided, Glasgow's success... @JMauskar @bforboseman @3rdworldnetwork @Ninad_India @KanitkarT @n_thanki #COP26
thehindu.com/opinion/lead/t…
Glasgow was necessary...Glasgow strengthened the Paris Agreement mechanism...."Glasgow clarified the ‘ambition cycle’, and this appears to have had results in the form of enhanced pledges." What??
How does this trick work? One, confuse two separate stages -- before the meeting and what the meeting decided. Before the meeting, the UK Presidency, US and EU went around "persuading". Global media campaign, etc. Glasgow had nothing to do with it!! Countries provide pledges.

Bunch of Annex-I scientists patting themselves on the back (@JoeriRogelj , @Knutti_ETH , @BardLahn, @JolenecookC ) for carbon budget in climate policy in the Glasgow decision ~CMA.3. Time to throw some history their way! @JMauskar @bforboseman @HarryWinkler @KanitkarT 1/n
By 2010, @KanitkarT and I were aware of carbon budgets and their importance for burden sharing in mitigation. We had a conference on the subject - Global Carbon Budgets and Equity in Climate Change attended by the Minister at that time, Jairam Ramesh. @JMauskar was there too. 3/n

FALSE NARRATIVES BEING MANUFACTURED!!
Nonsensical account by Politico...You don't have to have been "in the room" to know that this cannot be true. politico.eu/article/coal-d…
@byadavbjp @3rdworldnetwork @bforboseman @KanitkarT @nit_set @moefcc
Were India's concern on coal expressed at the last minute? That's an absolute lie. Let's check that out in detail. Here is an image of the para run through comparison in Word, highlighting the difference, between the versions of 12th and 13 th Nov (red is the later one)
On the draft of 12Nov, India noted the importance of the phaseout of all fossil fuels, and called for support to developing countries for a just transition. INGOs tweeted it. See here --

INDIA INAUGURATED COP26 WITH REASSURING THE WORLD!! In the drama of the final moments, what India committed in real terms should not be forgotten. All #COP26 analyses of ours must begin with this!! @JMauskar @moefcc @bforboseman @CEEWIndia @teriin @JaiAsundi @KanitkarT
UK presidency should not be allowed to shift the narrative. Finance still on paper, deep disappointment on loss and damage, global goal on adaptation put on fast track by G77 + China, despite developed countries. This is their record.
India worked constructively across the board. Reminded nations that the UNFCCC meant the phaseout of all fossil fuels. In every single room any relief to AOSIS, LDC, was fully supported.

Blatant discrimination against Africa by misuse of Article 2.1(c ) of Paris Agreement. Stop oil and gas in developed world before targeting Africa.
