Brown study: 'children born during the pandemic have significantly reduced verbal, motor, and overall cognitive performance compared to children born pre-pandemic.'

Masks cited as a probable culprit.

So far, only reported in a British publication.

dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1…
It will be interesting to see whether other outlets report on the study.

One of the most shocking things about pandemic discourse has been the denial that masking could be harming kids’ development.

Even if you believe it’s necessary, we should be able to talk abt downsides.
For the zillionth time, we see that the effects are inequitably distributed.

💔
This isn’t the first study that has raised concerns about early childhood development.

This was reported in the Guardian, for all those making inferences based on the publishing outlet.
I won’t soon forget my shock in learning that @AmerAcadPeds was removing info from their website about the importance of faces to babies.

As reported by zero media outlets, as far as I recall.

Mind-boggling, all of it.
Just as it became safe to talk about learning loss in mainstream media in June, 2021, I suspect it will be safe in a year to acknowledge that there have been risks to what we are doing to toddlers in states like mine.

It breaks my heart for American youth.
Do take the time to read the study itself. Again, the link:

This is a really good thread.

In an era of concerns about learning loss, teachers have enough on their hands without being asked to become counselors, too.
A glimpse of the culture around this issue in the UK:

The early anecdotal word on Omicron.

Reports out of South Africa, Israel, and Italy are consistent RE severity of symptoms.
Italy below.

While it’ll apparently take 2 weeks to have a good read on this variant, these early signs are reassuring.
Keep calm, and avoid the usual suspects on Twitter.

Sound advice.

Never forget that most educators have reopened schools without a bunch of drama.

All teachers are not their unions.

In fact, Ed’s are increasingly talking in ways very divorced from their unions’ positions.

A good example here. 😍🙏🏼

Many are talking about the softball interviews of Randi (and Psaki) today. But all is not lost!

Tonight, @danprimack interviews Randi for Axios.

Remember when the Axios interview of Trump was the first to properly hold him accountable?

🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞

Here are some questions that we need @danprimack to ask.

1. Why is Randi holding up NYC as a model for reopening (below and this morn) when most of its schools are closed?

See parent replies for details...
Here is a briefing note on the two-disconnected-cases closure rule from NYC moms @daniela127 @MiaEG_PD @ElgaCastro @ylrac_m.

Between these arbitrary closures, NYC’s excessive distancing norms (close to 8 ft), and closed middle and high schools, NYC’s 👎.

THE CDC GUIDANCE DOESN’T ALIGN WITH EVIDENCE, A 🧵

You won’t find a better takedown of the closure thresholds and 6-foot distancing, together in a tight, handy read, than @VPrasadMDMPH @vkoganpolisci’s new piece.

💯

Note use of the CDC’s own studies!

Also excellent: @j_g_allen of the Harvard Chan school of public health destroys the rationale for closure based on community spread in 5 minutes.

He makes a few additional points, like the high compliance with masking by kids.

Let us never forget that the lead author of the CDC’s Wisconsin study, @TracyBethHoeg, has critiques these same details, noting the high community spread in WI during tneis study, which established virtually no spread in schools.

Advocates for #openschools were exactly 0% surprised by the Oakley School Board incident.

Honestly, their hot mic comments were tame compared to the barbs lobbed #onhere.... by teachers.
Parents are accused of not caring of teachers die... when in fact, we have simply read @CDCgov studies like this one: cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/7…...

Of being sick of their kids...

Parents who talk about kids w/ mental health issues are told that better parenting would address it...
And of course my favorite, that they want to kill their own kids.

This gem is from a SLP.
