There is NO evidence to suggest that Omicrom will set us back to square one.

We have tests that will detect this.
We have therapies.
We have vaccines.

This is NOT March 2020.

Get vaccinated. Get the world vaccinated. Get boosted. It not only restores, it exceeds.
*Omicron. I HATE autocorrect. It’s early. Please excuse me.
We are lucky in the sense that it is relatively easy to detect Omicron. It can be detected with a PCR assay, without the need for extensive genome sequencing. This IS a good thing.
"Like Schoub, Dr. Sharon Alroy-Preis, the [Israeli] Health Ministry’s head of public services, noted that vaccinated individuals who have contracted the new variant appear to generally have a mild illness only." timesofisrael.com/s-african-expe…
Preliminary reports out of South Africa, Israel, Italy, and Hong Kong are consistent in regards to severity of symptoms in vaccinated individuals and are encouraging. While it is obvious we need more data, the take away message stays the same: GET VACCINATED. Links below.
“Dr. Wassila Jassat from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said that their surveillance has revealed that unvaccinated patients fared worse than vaccinated ones, adding that 87% of all admissions in Tshwane are unvaccinated patients.”news24.com/news24/southaf…
13 cases of the Omicron variant in Portugal- Lisbon Soccer Team. Most of the players are vaccinated, and they are either ASYMPTOMATIC or have MILD symptoms. Remember, Portugal has an 87% vaccination rate! reuters.com/business/healt…
I’d like to add onto Portugal that older staff (NOT just younger players) have been infected as well. “Two or three players and two or three staff have symptoms, but nothing too serious, the rest are asymptomatic.” This is why vaccination is important. independent.co.uk/news/world/eur…
I feel it is necessary to add onto this thread as there is misinterpretation of data from some epidemiologists regarding the situation in South Africa, specifically Gauteng circulating. May I refer you to this thread to get a better idea of the situation. Thank you @tomtom_m.
Dr. Unven Pillay on Omicron in Gauteng: “We've seen a sharp increase in cases for the past 10 days. So far they have mostly been very mild cases, with patients having flu-like symptoms: dry coughs, fever, night sweats, a lot of body pains.” He also noted that milder cases
occurred in those who were vaccinated against the initial virus. However, Pillay also warned that the observations could change as more becomes known about the strain. That includes effects in older people, who could develop more severe symptoms than the ones experienced by those
in their 20s and 30s. That demographic makes up the majority of current cases in South Africa. "Vaccinated people tend to do much better. We have not seen a vast increase in hospitalizations, but this is still early days.” newsweek.com/most-omicron-c…
Vaccines work. Two doctors (ages 50 & 70) in Israel who have been boosted tested positive for Omicron. They are both resting at home with only very mild symptoms. Still EARLY as we wait for data, but if anything, once again, please get VACCINATED. cnn.com/world/live-new…

An official speaking on behalf of the World Health Organization has said most Omicron cases are 'mild' and there's no evidence to suggest vaccines may be less effective against the variant but did say some mutations of the virus indicate an increased risk of quicker transmission.
The World Health Organization has also urged countries to apply "an evidence-informed and risk-based approach" to travel measures, saying blanket bans will not prevent the spread of the new Omicron COVID variant. Please, when you can, if you have not already, get vaccinated.
A top official in Botswana's health ministry said on Tuesday that 16 out of the 19 cases of the Omicron variant detected in the country were asymptomatic. You can read more here: news.sky.com/story/covid-19…

PRELIMINARY DATA but good news for your afternoon! Pfizer vaccine’s is only SLIGHTLY less effective in preventing infection with Omicron than with Delta- 90% as opposed to 95%- while it is AS EFFECTIVE in preventing serious symptoms- around 93% – at least for those boosted!
There are indications that individuals fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, within six months or with the booster, are also protected against the Omicron variant, Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz said Tuesday, after another two cases of individuals infected with the variant
were identified, bringing the total to four. “In the coming days we will have more accurate information about the efficacy of the vaccine against Omicron but there is already room for optimism, and there are initial indications that those who are vaccinated with a vaccine STILL

Some things to please keep in mind today:
•There is NO data available yet regarding vaccine efficacy and Omicron. What you are hearing is speculation right now. That’s it.
•Breakthrough infections DO NOT mean vaccines “don’t work.”
•DO NOT wait for variant specific boosters-
to get boosted. If you are eligible, GET IT.
•If your vaccine is preventing you from facing severe disease and worse, it is doing EXACTLY what it was designed to do.
•Antibodies are only ONE part of your immune response.
•Yes, the vaccines will likely take a hit in regards-
to nAbs. Does that mean they are rendered useless? NO! They take a hit with every variant in regards to protection vs. infection, not severe disease, this will likely be no different.
•Know what not only restores that protection vs. infection but EXCEEDS it? BOOSTERS.

Good news for your morning.

“The new Omicron variant of the Coronavirus results in MILD disease, WITHOUT prominent symptoms.” -Angelique Coetzee, the chairwoman of the South African Medical Association.
"It presents mild disease with symptoms being sore muscles and tiredness for a day or two not feeling well. So far, we have detected that those infected do not suffer loss of taste or smell. They might have a slight cough. There are no prominent symptoms. Of those infected some
are currently being treated at home.” Hospitals have NOT been overburdened by Omicron patients and the new strain has not been detected in vaccinated individuals there. We know those vaccinated from other countries infected have been mild or asymptomatic.

If there is one thing I am going to tell you today it is to IGNORE the media and the clickbait headlines on this new variant. There is NO plausible scenario this will take us back to square one and there is a lot of misinformation currently circulating. Working on a thread now.
Just a friendly reminder. Despite what you might hear, there has yet to be a variant that isn’t susceptible to the vaccines.

Let’s talk about Nu (B.1.1.529) clear up some misconceptions, and talk about why it is unlikely it will evade vaccine-induced immunity. 🧵
Why are variants unlikely to FULLY evade vaccine-induced immunity?
•Vaccines are POLYCLONAL
•CD8+ T-cells covering 52 epitopes across the spike protein
•CD4+ T-cells covering 23 epitopes across the spike protein

@angie_rasmussen THANK YOU for saying this. We are already looking into it and what I have tried to express to everyone is a higher number of mutations does not immediately need to cause the need for red alarms.
@angie_rasmussen The other thing to note is that we are looking at an area with a very low vaccination rate (35% to be exact). This does not reflect what we may see in an area of higher vaccination. We need more data and information and less panicking and assumptions.
@angie_rasmussen What can I possibly tell people right now except to get vaccinated. If you don’t want to worry about variants, make sure you are protected. That is our best line of defense right now. NO ONE fully knows how the vaccines will do with this but what I do know from working on them-
