1/ When @yowitzer was 12, he played an Amazon on Diablo II. A stranger on Battle.net promised to teach him how to dupe. Joined a lobby and followed the instructions. Howie's body exploded and all his items dropped to the ground. The stranger picked them all up.
👇
2/ Howie cried.

Luckily, Howie can heal his childhood Internet gaming trauma through Web3.

Howie recently left his job in finance as a quant at a stock exchange to become the game economy designer for @GuildOfGuardian at @Immutable. A Play-to-Earn NFT MMORPG.
3/ One key difference vs Web3 gaming is that in Diablo II, Howie never actually owned the items. They resided in business servers. And his character could be deleted if he stopped playing the game. When they're NFTs, even if the game disappears, the NFTs are still always there.
4/ Another key difference vs Web3 gaming is that with Diablo II there is a chance for hacks in centralized exchanges. On blockchain, each player is responsible for their own security.
5/ Do Diablo II items actually have monetary value? Only if you can liquidate them. Otherwise, the price cannot be discovered.

In Diablo II, a third party community emerged to facilitate transactions. But the system was inefficient and susceptible to scams. Web3 solves this.
6/ Diablo III had a real money auction house. It was an unanimous consensus that it ruined the game. The gameplay was not designed with the consideration of a market. Players stopped playing the game. Just collected gold and bought items from the auction house. Wasn't fun.
7/ Web3 gaming requires explicit consideration of a market. In a way that produces more complex and fun gameplay properties.
8/ One solution is requiring a strong social component. Instead of an individual player, you'll need to contribute as a social team. Have certain objectives that require interacting with the market in a collective basis.
9/ Another idea that Howie's excited about Web3 gaming is monetary policy. Monetary policy will be exercised because the game will buy back tokens. Which will create an inflationary pressure on the price of the tokens. Like printing money.
10/ When the Fed buys up bonds, they're printing money.

Depending on how much developers buy back, it'll affect the money supply of the game. Affecting gameplay. Monetary policy will be a fascinating experiment where there is a meta game between developers and players.

1/ We're introducing a podcast series where we bring on friends to learn about what's happening with Web3. On this episode @Jaydchang tells us his journey cofounding @genopets - a Play-to-Earn NFT MMORPG.

Here's what we learned: 👇
2/ VCs invest in crypto companies using SAFTs (Simple Agreement for Future Tokens).

Similar to the traditional VC model with SAFEs (Equity).

Allows VCs to quickly invest money with the company promising to give them a % of tokens with cap/discount.

3/ Having a successful token launch/NFT requires building an engaged and excited community. @genopets built out their Discord to 130k members prior to a token launch and genesis NFT sale. One of the ways they got people excited was their evolution demo: demo.genopets.me

Super excited to join @BoredApeYC today. I've been thinking a lot about #BAYC. Took me awhile, but I think I finally understand it. Any advice for someone new is welcome! #apefollowape

Here's what I've learned. A thread 🧵: Image
Sapiens came to dominate the world because it is the only animal that can cooperate flexibly in large numbers.

We've been able to do this because of our unique capacity to believe in Fiction.

To believe in Stories.
When we collectively believe, we achieve the impossible. Religion is a story. Nations are a story. Corporations are a story. Technology is a story.

When we collectively believe something has value, it has value. Money is a story. Bitcoin is a story. @BoredApeYC is a story.

2/ @AndrewYang built nonprofit Venture for America and ran it for 7 years. Trained entrepreneurs to help create jobs in cities like Detroit, Cleveland, St Louis, Birmingham, New Orleans. Was given awards by Obama Administration and had documentary made by Netflix.
3/ Yang discovered there was a deeper problem. Every job he helped create, he realized we lost a thousand. “I saw that we were pouring water into a bathtub that has a giant hole ripped in the bottom.”
