#HologramTHREAD: Deprogramming Americans

#YangGang @AndrewYang #Yang2020 #ISupportYang

In 6+ months of conversation on Twitter (aka "arguments"), I've had many head-desk moments when the exact same topic comes up moments later.

After 7,000+ tweets, it occurs to me ...
We are taking this from the standpoint of "educating" people, but that's not right.

We are "deprogramming" them.

Americans have been PROGRAMMED to believe a bunch of complex distortions of reality by hearing these things all their lives.

A common one:
I'm sure Dave, Dave's parents, and Dave's ancestors all believe some version of that trope. After all, it is in the Bible! This is one of the cornerstones of the "Christian Work Ethic" that drove western society to great heights through the Industrial Revolution.

It isn't true.

Why @AndrewYang’s campaign is brilliant: a thread, with predictions at the end. #YangGang #Yang2020 @scottsantens

After 2016, I felt disenfranchised. All the emotional energy I put into the Sanders campaign — and then Clinton — felt wasted.
So in ‘17 and ‘18, I started looking into what went wrong. I had become a boilerplate social justice progressive up until that point. My gut told me that we had been blindsided by Trump because we fundamentally misread the room.
So I started paying attention to political outsiders who challenged liberal and conservative orthodoxies.

Finally, in 2018, I read an interview with Yang. He had decided to run for President on UBI. At the time, his website was threadbare — he seemed like an intriguing blip.

In East Germany, there was no official unemployment. The government guaranteed everybody a job. There was plenty to do. And who knows better what people should do with their time than the government? So they started to organise it, all done in good intentions.
#YangGang
Turns out it was a disaster to organise. It build a monster of beaurocracy which brought out the worst in people. The abuse of power, the corruption and the arbitrariness was soul crushing.
Nobody should get told their place in society. They should be encouraged to find it.
The fourth industrial revolution is real. And so is the increasing economic pressure it puts on a lot of people. Automation already tilted Americans into opting for radical political change with Trump.
Let's tilt it again. This time in the right direction, forward. #Yang2020

This is Day 2 of my mission to convince Bernie supporters of why an Andrew Yang presidency would be better for them and their families’ wellbeing. Yesterday, I spoke about financial security. Today, I will go at length about education [Thread]
Let’s start by acknowledging the extent of both candidates’ education plans. Bernie’s publicly known plans for education are to introduce universal pre-k, tax-payer funded tuition for public universities, cancelling all student debt, and throwing wads of cash at the k-12 system
Andrew also supports universal pre-K, but is ardently against free college. Instead, he opts to give everyone a Universal Basic Income, drastically lower the cost of college of those who want to go, cancel much of the student debt, and make structural change to the k-12 system

I understand why #YangGang and #Bernie supporters don't get along.

1) @AndrewYang trusts people, whereas @BernieSanders trusts institutions. This is vital. Hence the #FreedomDividend puts $$$ directly into people's hands but #FJG/$15 makes people go through institutions for $$$
2) Yang is inherently capitalist, Sanders is inherently socialist. People who support Sanders want to totally upend the system. Us #YangGang want capitalism to work for us.
3) Yang has spent his entire career in the private sector, as opposed to Bernie who only has (extensive) govt experience. So Yang looks at #FightFor15 and thinks "This can hurt small businesses" and Sanders discovers that its hard to run a business. cnbc.com/2019/07/25/for…

Here are just a few reasons why all #blackpeople #Blacktwitter #BlackLivesMatter should #GoogleAndrewYang

1) #FreedomDivided of 1K/mo for all US adults. Could help build black wealth quickly. 3 fam adults living together = $3K/Mo buy a 200K house in 5.5 years #YangGang
2) On top of the #FreedomDividend, he also recognizes the historical injustices done to us through slavery and supports the exploratory bill in Congress to figure out reparations logistics. #Yang2020

3) Our boy @AndrewYang also wants massive criminal justice reform. Every cop gets a camera and turning it off is assumption of guilt, no private prisons, decrim of weed and opiates, and mass pardoning for those in jail for nonviolent drug charges. #GoogleAndrewYang #YangGang

Alright #YangGang I’m going on a long MATH-filled rant.

Thread

@BernieSanders has proposed a ban on nuclear energy. I’m going to dissect piece by piece why this is the most regressive stance any candidate can take on fighting climate change.
Contrary to popular belief, nuclear is the safest, most reliable, and most cost effective way of generating electricity. Don’t believe me? Well here’s all the data and MATH that I’ve gathered in my research...

* all sources at the end*
Solar panels create 300x more toxic waste per unit of electricity than nuclear.

1/ Who is the Asian man running for president who wants to give everyone $1,000 who won't wear a tie?

👇To prepare for @AndrewYang's third qualified debate, like and retweet this thread to share with everyone that doesn't yet know! #Yang2020 #YangGang
2/ @AndrewYang built nonprofit Venture for America and ran it for 7 years. Trained entrepreneurs to help create jobs in cities like Detroit, Cleveland, St Louis, Birmingham, New Orleans. Was given awards by Obama Administration and had documentary made by Netflix.
3/ Yang discovered there was a deeper problem. Every job he helped create, he realized we lost a thousand. “I saw that we were pouring water into a bathtub that has a giant hole ripped in the bottom.”

The way we get @AndrewYang's #FreedomDividend of $1k/mo for all citizens signed into law is to have a Congress full of reps who will get it through the House + Senate. We need to vote for pro-UBI reps & we need to give the boot to anti-UBI reps. Ask Congress candidates about UBI.
If you live in New York's 13th district, @JFKii is running on UBI. He would sign the Freedom Dividend of $1,000/mo into law.

#UBICongress #BasicIncome #YangGang #Yang2020

If you live in Massachusetts, @BriannaWu is running for Congress in District 8. She is very pro-UBI, is very informed about technology, and has followed me for years.

Why you should consider to vote this next election and also consider to vote @AndrewYang as president of the United States, a thread:
Andrew Yang thinks robots will take over most jobs in the future. He wants to change the way we value work and value ourselves.
Andrew Yang is gearing the future towards entrepreneurship as a result of AI takeover. That means everyone right now can be whatever they want to be, if they work towards it.

Political rant ahead. Warning: thread ahead! It's sad to me how many people automatically disqualify @AndrewYang just because he is running under the democratic party.
Besides showing ignorance in the political system, this just proves that politicians are not the only ones to blame for the polarization of the United States. Political policies and beliefs differ from one candidate to the next, even within the same party.
It's even more sad to me, however, that the policies that would help the most people are bashed the most by others who claim since they didn't get help, why should others.

Keep in mind as you watch @MSNBC not mention his name again that @AndrewYang is only being out-polled by three of these people on stage with him, and his RCP national average puts him at 8th overall out of the 20 at the debates... /13

MSNBC: "Thanks for accepting our invite to speak to our audience today... lol/jk... here's live footage of Bernie."

MSNBC: "A new qualifying poll came out from Monmouth where 2% is needed to get into the fall debates. Let's exclude @AndrewYang again, despite his getting 2% for the 4th time and becoming the 9th candidate to officially qualify for the fall debates."

We started looking at automated activity (and potentially other aspects of) tweets containing various #<candidate first or last name>2020 hashtags (e.g., #Warren2020, #Kamala2020, #Bernie2020, etc.) We examined tweets from Jan 1st - July 3rd, 2019.

cc: @ZellaQuixote
Looking more closely at the 2020 hashtags that have both a significant percentage (we used 10% as a cutoff, 3%-ish is average) of automated activity and at least 1000 tweets, we see sizable volume for tweets posted via VK (Russian Facebook-esque social network.) What's the deal?
The VK activity in the 2020 hashtags comes from 21 very similarly-named accounts. Account names are the display name with "Im" prepended (e.g., "Alberta Swift" = "@ImAlbertaSwift.) All tweets were posted via VK, and none tweeted before 2018 (despite some being created in 2015.)

Holy shit. They did it. The crazy bastards did it. @MSNBC created a graphic with photos of the 20 candidates to appear in the first debates, and they actually went so far as to remove @AndrewYang and include someone who didn't even qualify. This is shameless in how brazen it is.
Looks like we made enough noise, #YangGang. @AndrewYang has been unerased by @MSNBC (and @marwilliamson too). #Yang2020
Good Lord. @MSNBC just can't help themselves. In the latest example, they include his photo in a list of top 8, and manage to read every name but @AndrewYang's??

So you've decided to vote for @AndrewYang.

But what else can you to do help him win?

1. DONATE.

For new donors, as little as $1 counts, and will increase Yang's individual donor count, which is a crucial metric.

Money is the fuel that campaigns run on. The more money raised, the farther he can go. Fundraising also = press coverage.

2. Donate again!

If you've donated in the past, please consider making another contribution, and/or setting up recurring donations. This is important. If you can afford to chip in another $20, it moves the needle. #SecureTheBag

RANT INCOMING

1/11 I’m so over establishment politicians—Republican and Democrat. I want my government officials to have ONE agenda: improving citizens’ lives and making this country the best it can be. @AndrewYang has this agenda and this agenda alone. For our current...
2/11 ...politicians, the goal seems to be to always shame and destroy the other side, regardless of whether or not they have a good idea. And people actually buy into this tribal BS. Tribal republicans: you’re full of shit or just extremely ignorant if you honestly believe...
3/11 ...that Trump and the anchors at @FoxNews’ (who constantly lie and cover for him) goal is to make your lives better. Tribal democrats: you’re full of shit or just extremely ignorant if you honestly believe that Trump supporters are all evil and that establishment...

Many people don't seem to understand that if you install UBI within a conditional benefits system and keep all the conditional benefits without replacing any of them with UBI then all the counterproductive effects are still there. Paid work is still punished. Paternalism remains.
This is a problem mainly among those on the left, who see UBI as just more money where more is always better, when this is about far more than money. It's about unconditionality. Without UBI we need SNAP, but SNAP should be replaced by UBI because SNAP is a paternalistic program.
It also makes no sense to me to look at a group of people equally in poverty & decide that some of them should get more than others if they're already receiving assistance. Our safety net has too many holes. It's unjust to help those in the net more than those who hit the ground.

Among the most frequently asked questions of all among those first hearing about universal basic income is the concern that prices will rise. This goes into that question in-depth & even includes applicable evidence from the Alaska dividend.

Another one of the most asked questions about universal basic income is if too many people will stop working if they no longer are forced to work to live. I wrote this article to answer that question and about the question itself.

Looking at twitter, it's been a while but I feel like I should come back to this.
Things I'm thinking about now:
@AndrewYang #Yang2020 's Freedom Dividend.
As an engineer in robotics I am constantly asked by people I meet about two things: Are robots going to kill us all? (No)
And is automation coming for our jobs? (unfortunately, yes)
Huge industries (trucking, retail, call center, ride share, etc.) are about to be and are being disrupted by automation in a way similar to what happened to manufacturing jobs over the past few decades. It's big.
I, as an engineer, have wondered if there is an impetus on me (or my field) to do something or to help the people we are displacing. A duty to sound the sirens and tell people what's coming. I think the answer is yes, but I don't know how.
This is not a matter of if, just when.
