If you are tired of hearing about another school shooting every week, and more gun fatalities every single day, you are not alone. The question is: what can we do about it? Here are some ways we can actually reduce the number of gun deaths/violence in the United States?
(Thread)
1. BAN WEAPONS OF WAR

Mass shootings are almost always committed with assault weapons like AR-15’s that are military-grade killing machines. They serve no legitimate purpose for and should not ever be in the hands of civilians. We can renew the ban Republicans let expire in 2004
2. REDUCE LARGE-CAPACITY MAGAZINES

Research supports this; even if it may take time to have an effect. It’s also common sense. Gunmen are less deadly when they have to stop to reload. Even if this only reduced shootings by 1% that would be over 650 fewer shootings every year.
3. KEEP GUNS AWAY FROM KIDS

If you have a gun at home, it is your responsibility to keep it secure. This means storing it in a locked safe or container with a tamper-resistant lock. Safe-storage laws have been found to substantially reduce youth suicides and accidental shootings
4. UNIVERSAL BACKGROUND CHECKS

We need background checks FOR EVERY PERSON EVERY SINGLE TIME they purchase a gun. This is such a basic common sense and straightforward practice that could save thousands of lives every year. It’s also supported by over 90% of the U.S. population.
5. REDUCE THE OVERABUNDANCE OF GUNS

There are ~390 million guns in America. That’s almost 60 million more guns than PEOPLE. We can reduce this by implementing buyback programs, limiting the number of guns that can be purchased at a time & holding gun dealers & owners accountable
6. REGULATE GUNS LIKE CARS

This means requiring people to be trained and licensed to operate a firearm before getting one. It would mean that every gun is registered to its legal owner in a nationwide database, which would also incentivize more people to keep their guns secure.
7. END CITIZENS UNITED

This is the law that opened the floodgates of money into politics and keeps an endless amount flowing directly from lobbying groups for big corporations (like the @NRA) to our politicians’ coffers. The majority of NRA-backed candidates are Republicans.
8. ADDRESS TOXIC MASCULINITY’S GUN FETISH

The vast majority of shooters are men, most of them white. Men commit over 90% of violent crime. This isn’t due to biological differences but the way boys are socialized to equate expressions of violence with strength, power and control
9. STOP GLORIFYING GUN VIOLENCE

This is where we see a huge partisan divide, with Republicans & right-wing pundits almost unilaterally to blame. The @GOP venerates people like Kyle Rittenhouse & Ashli Babbitt and continually embraces domestic terrorist & white supremacist groups
10. SUPPORT GUN CONTROL ORGS

As powerful as the gun lobby is in the U.S, it is rivaled by some incredible organizations that are fighting for gun control and safety like @MomsDemand, @Everytown, @GiffordsCourage, @CSGV & @AMarch4OurLives. Follow, volunteer & donate if you can

This politico comparison of SCOTUS justices’ stated position on Roe at their confirmation hearings and their current position exemplifies exactly why the court has no legitimacy. Perjury is a felony. All 6 @GOP-appointed justices lied to get confirmed. politico.com/news/2021/12/0…

These are great questions by @donwinslow. I’m going to answer all the ones that I can to the best of my knowledge.
#ShockingUnansweredJan6Questions
1.) Why wasn’t Trump evacuated to the Bunker under the WH during January 6th?

Trump was one of the most primary organizers and inciters of the attack and therefore knew he wasn’t in any danger.
2.) How did the rioters know to target the only few unsecured windows at the Capitol?

Complicit Republican members of Congress—we know of at least 9–must have provided this information.

What does race/racism have to do with the Rittenhouse case/trial/verdict?

Since that question is evidently confounding so many people, let’s talk about it (Thread)
1.) White Privilege
Kyle showed up to a BLM protest in another state w/ an illegally obtained assault weapon, killed 2 people, shot a third, & not only wasn’t shot or harmed by police; they didn’t even stop him; instead they DIRECTED HIM where to go and he was NEVER ARRESTED.
To contrast, Breonna Taylor was SHOT & KILLED WHILE SLEEPING IN HER BED by police; Tamir Rice was shot & killed for having a toy gun; Trayvon Martin was shot & killed for a bag of skittles; & George Floyd was suffocated to death by a cop who thought he used a counterfeit $20 bill

Parents who think it’s racist for their children to be taught about slavery and racism in school are a great example of why we need to teach our children about slavery and racism in school.
Just watch this interview with Patti Hidalgo Menders, a mother of six who is fighting against the equity and inclusion curriculum in Leesburg, Virginia. I’m gonna break down every ridiculous thing this woman says.
She opens by saying that her county (Loudon, VA) is the wealthiest in the country and therefore “there’s not a lot of racism.” The notion that wealth precludes or reduces racism is false. Wealthy people tend to be better educated; but they are not inherently any less prejudiced.

Since the members of the Jan 6th committee have said they will hold Bannon in contempt if he doesn’t show up to testify (today at noon), and Bannon has said repeatedly he isn’t going to show, let’s talk about contempt of Congress—what it is, how it works and what actually happens
Contempt of Congress is defined in statute 2 U.S.C.A. § 192 (1938), which states that any person who is summoned before Congress who ‘willfully makes default’ (refuses to appear) shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and subject to a maximum $100,000 fine and 12 month imprisonment.
According to the Congressional Research Service, the first Contempt charge was issued in 1795 and since 1980 nearly 30 people have been found in contempt. Almost all modern instances have resulted in individuals cooperating or facing consequences in terms of jail time and fines.

I’m not a fan of Bill Maher, but I can recognize a prescient prediction: & this is not only terrifyingly plausible, it’s the path we are currently on & will remain on if we don’t get voting rights legislation passed or hold Trump accountable for his crimes
I want to clarify a few things. First, if your takeaway from this is that all hope for America is lost, then you’ve missed the point. These predictions are not set in stone. We have the power to change them right now. So stay involved & engaged in the fight for democracy.
Second, I do not believe Trump will be the nominee in 2024. While I know most people have lost faith in the notion that Trump will actually face some consequences for his crimes, I have not. He still faces thousands of criminal charges and he will be brought down by one of them. Image
