There is A LOT of Product Management Theory.

But very little about how you work with people (and yourself!) to get things done.

For me, it comes down to understanding and improving Emotional Intelligence (EQ).

Some EQ building blocks and tips on how to improve.

- Relationship Management -

Building effective collaboration and momentum, whatever the situation.

- Self-Awareness -

Looking inwards about what makes you tick and what makes you tock.

Those are the four core blocks of EQ:

That’s it.

I've been thinking about how Product Teams orientate themselves as they scale...and what things they might then look after.

So, a few thoughts on how Metrics, Outcomes & Flywheels might help here...

Warning: TIP (thought-in-progress)

Let's get the boring stuff out the way first, so we're roughly on the same page.

Some definitions (which will help with future visuals)

Metrics...

Outcomes...

Note - there's not a defined Metric:Outcome ratio that I know of. I've used four, because...symmetry.

I expect this will be a divisive opinion...but I'm starting to feel that for the majority of teams, goal setting that include metrics are a bit pointless.

(1/8)
Now, I don't think that goal setting, or metrics, are pointless. Both are really important!

But the combination of the two is odd for most teams.

Why? Because its usually almost impossible for them to be reasonable & as a result it only causes tension.

(2/8)
There are exceptions to this, probably, where teams have such ownership of a domain that they can reasonably predict how much they can or cannot improve a metric over a given time period.

I'm not talking about them.

Thinking about balance in teams.

Their preferences & capabilities to 'Sense' & then 'Respond'.

These may be modes people can switch between...but without capability across both there's likely to be unresolved tension. (1/6) Image
Sensing and Responding could also be...

- Strategy vs Tactics
- Discovery vs Delivery
- Long term vs Short Term
etc.

(2/6)
Sensing is about understanding and interpreting the world.

Asking questions. Connecting dots. Feeling your way.

A great senser can see far ahead.

I created this image a little while ago to visualise different ways I've seen Product Teams work.

Someone asked me to explain them a little further...so I shall...(1/8)
'Transformation'

Usually seen in large orgs trying to shift from 'waterfall', by still doing 'waterfall' but calling it 'Agile'.

Lots of process very little progress.

It might look like collaboration, but its anything but effective. All comms are through 'mgmt' (2/8)
'Design as-a-service'

Product & Engineering have a seat at the strategy table, but Design are left to be called in as needed.

Sometimes desired...but suboptimal.

Product and Eng need to bring Design in as equal partners. (3/8)

When will it be ready? (1/8) Image
Yes, its often a very hard question to answer, but its also a valid one to ask.

If you don't take control of the answer...other people will.

So, where do you start? (2/8)
This has to be a team effort - whatever you do as a Product Person, don't just make it up!

You need to discuss with your team what you think a reasonable confidence interval is, and then how you are going to communicate that to everyone else. (3/8)

Although 2021 isn't quite up, I've collated a Product Management Advent Calendar with 24 of the best #productmgmt tweets I could find throughout the year.

It's been a blast learning with each and every one of you.

I hope you all have a restful end to the year.
