We’re looking back on 2021 - the challenges and the losses, as well as the strength and determination of our incredible coalition and the power of the wins we've achieved together for survivors of violence against women and girls ⬇️
Sarah Everard. Bibaa Henry. Nicole Smallman. Sabina Nessa. Countless others.
2021 took a heavy toll. United in grief and rage, we took to the streets in remembrance, demanding change and propelling a national conversation about violence against women on a level never seen before
Although our landmark case against the CPS came to an end, we continue our fight for #RapeJusticeNow.
We may not have won in court, but by rallying together with thousands of incredible survivors, we put rape on the agenda like never before bit.ly/3yAsSVq
Our work as a coalition campaigning for #RapeJusticeNow saw the government deliver its rape review, and we secured major wins for accountability (justice agency performance scorecards), transformation of police response (operations Bluestone & Soteria) and an apology to survivors
We held government to account for ending online abuse against women + girls: creating VAWG sector principles for online safety law, ensuring survivors' voices are heard and launching a petition that secured 30,000 supporters in just 24 hrs. Add your name 👇change.org/EndOnlineAbuse…
We were honoured to support the new Anti-Racism in VAWG Charter and workshops helping those in our sector to #EndRacismInVAWG
We go into 2022 part of a strong and growing anti-racist movement in the violence against women and girls sector endingracisminvawg.org
Government heeding our calls for a public campaign on violence against women was a major win.
While we await the campaign in 2022, we'll keep up the pressure on government to involve expert women’s orgs and ensure the campaign is multi-year, well funded and a national priority.
This year, the government passed the Domestic Abuse Act after years of campaigning by women’s organisations. But we’re not celebrating.
Almost a decade after signing the Istanbul Convention - the international gold standard for responding to violence against women + girls, the UK has STILL not ratified it due to government’s failure to support migrant women.
🗣️ We won’t stop until all women are equally protected
This year we continued united as a sector, with fortnightly calls enabling us to meet the immense challenges of the pandemic. We’re proud to work together against inequality and discrimination with specialist orgs led by and for Black, minoritised + disabled women leading the way
This year spotlighted the crisis of sexual violence in schools, as Ofsted found nearly all girls have experienced harassment or abuse.
This year, we welcomed a VAWG strategy that acknowledged the need for radical change and a focus on prevention.
What we need to see now is political will and resourcing that will enable bold and transformative change, rather than just papering over cracks endviolenceagainstwomen.org.uk/womens-groups-…
To our coalition of incredible activists, frontline services, researchers and survivors: none of this work is possible without you.
OUR HEARING HAS STARTED at the Court of Appeal has started, with extremely interesting opening remarks by the judge - raising possibility of unusual further consideration of our case! #RapeJusticeNow 1/
Judge is raising questions with CPS' advocate as to - what is it to change policy/practice related to charging; the policy isn't only what the DPP believes it to be, it is also how he communicates it... 2/
NEWS! Sign Fern Champion’s petition demanding that the Government funds rape counselling services properly – so they’re there when survivors need them #NoSurvivorTurnedAway#IWD2019ow.ly/X0TB30nXRVj
TODAY: our major new survey on attitudes to sexual consent - up to a third of adults still doubt it’s rape if no physical violence, if there’s flirting beforehand, if woman changes her mind & if it’s marriage/long term relationship #Ibelieveher#MeTooendviolenceagainstwomen.org.uk/major-new-surv…
Our survey also finds - 40% of people do not see ‘stealthing’ (removing a condom without consent) as rape; and there’s a big generational divide on attitudes to consent (over 65s less likely to see non-consent as rape) #Ibelieveher#MeToo
The attitudes are alarming - not only are these people potential jurors in rape trials, they are also the family & friends of women and girls who are assaulted, and they may question whether what happened was abusive & harmful #Ibelieveher#MeToo#16days
