Of the 100 counties with the largest Voting Age Population (VAP), Joe Biden won 91 of those counties last year.
Of the 100 counties whose VAP makes up the largest percentage of their state’s VAP (big counties where much of the state population lives), Biden won 79 of them.
For example, there are 5 counties that make up the majority of their states’ Voting Age Population:
Clark County, NV
Honolulu County, HI
Maricopa County, AZ
Providence County, RI
New Castle County, DE
Biden won all 5 counties. And, obviously, all 5 states.
Counties which make up 10% or more of their state’s population which were won by Biden despite Trump winning the state:
Salt Lake County, UT
Douglass County, NE
(Biden won 1 Electoral Vote from Nebraska’s Second Congressional District)
Johnson County, KS
Jefferson County, KY
Counties which make up 10% or more of their state’s population which were won by Biden despite Trump winning the state (cont):
Lancaster County, NE
St. Louis County, MO
Harris County, TX
Polk County, IA
Marion County, IN
Jefferson County, AL
Pulaski County, AR
Counties which make up 10% or more of their state’s population which were won by Biden despite Trump winning the state (cont):
Shelby County, TN
Miami-Dade County, FL
Jackson County, MO
Gallatin County, MT
Missoula County, MT
Franklin County, OH
Cuyahoga County, OH
Counties which make up 10% or more of their state’s population which were won by Biden despite Trump winning the state (cont):
Davidson County, TN
Wake County, NC
Mecklenburg County, NC
Biden won 21 counties that make up 10% or more of the voting age population in Trump states.
On the other hand, here are the counties which make up 10% or more of their state’s population which were won by Trump despite Biden winning the state:
Sussex County, DE
El Paso County, CO
Penobscot County, ME
And that’s it.
Biden won 21 counties that make up a tenth of more of the voting age population in states Trump won.
Trump won 3 counties that make up a tenth or more of the voting age population in states Biden won.
Trump won a lot more counties. But Biden won counties with huge populations.
If you limit the conversation to the states which Trump tried to steal and which he still falsely claims he won, the same thing is true there.
Of the 10 counties that make up a tenth or more of the voting age population in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan. Nevada, Biden won all 10.
Why is this important? Because winning a state in a Presidential contest means (unless somebody figures out a way to not count the votes) winning the majority of the votes in the state. Winning a county where big chunks of the population lives helps a lot toward winning states.
Examples:
Georgia has 159 counties. And there are more people who are old enough to vote in its largest county, Fulton, than there are in Georgia’s 84 smallest counties COMBINED.
Fulton is a blue county. Which is why the Georgia GOP has focused on making voting harder there.
Texas has 254 counties. And there are more people who are old enough to vote in its largest county, Harris, than there are in Texas’ 213 smallest counties COMBINED.
Harris is a blue county. Which is why the Texas GOP is focused on making voting harder there.
Most of Nevada’s voting age population lives in Clark County.
Most of Arizona’s voting age population lives in Maricopa County.
Michigan has 83 counties. And more people of voting age live in its largest county, Wayne, than live in Michigan’s 57 smallest counties.
So this is why the GOP has been so obsessed with #VoterSuppression. The party, especially under Trump and his clones, does not generally do well in places where a lot of people live, which also tend to be places which are fairly ethnically diverse.
And these places which are generally diverse and which make up a significant share of the population in almost every state, if won by Democrats, makes it easier for a state to tip blue. Making it more inconvenient to vote might diminish turnout which might keep the state red.
And if all else fails, some people figure, you can always just not count all the votes.
We are at the point where a substantial number of people in one of our two major political parties values winning elections more than democracy itself. That’s why our system is in peril.
And this is important - NOBODY IS MORE OR LESS IMPORTANT BASED ON WHERE THEY LIVE (or based on what continent their ancestors came from).
This is just math. The idea of democracy is that everybody gets a vote. Then you count them. And whoever wins, wins.
But some people have given up on the idea of democracy because they don’t think it works for them. Which is sad beyond words.
Ironically, a lot of the people who think they can’t win if everybody votes have never even tried asking everybody for their votes.

Percentage of Republicans saying that each of these is the most important problem in America:
1) Economy, unemployment and jobs (28%) 2) Immigration (13%) 3) Crime or corruption (12%) 4) Other (10%) 5) Morality (7%) 5) Public health, disease and illness (7%, tied)
%of Democrats saying these are the most important problem in the US: 1) Economy, unemployment and jobs (17%) 1) Public health, disease and illness (17%, tied) 3) Environment and Climate (14%) 4) Healthcare system (11%) 5) Equality and discrimination (8%) 5) Other (8%, tied)
The economy was never as good during Trump’s Presidency as he and his surrogates claimed it was.
But Trump is basically a used car salesman. A self-promoter. Aided by a messaging and propaganda operation that crafts simple, easy-to-remember messages and repeats them endlessly.
Most people, when they see the actual numbers for the economy under Trump, are surprised, because it’s not what they thought. Why was it not what they thought? Because they believed it was the greatest ever. Why did they think that? Because Trump said it. Over and over again.
Even media outlets that are not friendly to Trump tended to take his boasts about the state of the economy at face value, rarely researching the facts and correcting the record.
They would repeat his claims about the economy even as 2019 added the fewest jobs since 2010.
In the 2020 Presidential Election, there was a 15 point gap between black men and black women in terms of their votes for Biden or Trump, according to Pew Research. pewresearch.org/politics/2021/…
Black Men:
87% Biden/12% Trump
Black Women:
95% Biden/5% Trump
(Which, incidentally, is one of the things that always amused me about Fox News constantly trotting out performance artists Diamond & Silk and Candice Owens. Black women just happen to be the demographic group LEAST likely to support Trump).
Another interesting thing from this study. For whites and latinos, there was a difference in who people voted for by educational attainment - more so for whites and somewhat for latinos. But for blacks, there was no difference at all by education.
Joe Biden needs to learn a lesson from Bill Clinton in 1994.
After two years of progressive idealism, Clinton and his Democratic Party got crushed in the 1994 midterms. Clinton deftly moved to the center. Then he won re-election. And his Dems even did well in his second midterm.
Biden has the ability to make this switch one year earlier into his term than Clinton did. And, perhaps, in the process, save American democracy.
Biden won because he was perceived as a moderate. He won contests that Democrats haven’t won in a while (AZ, GA and NE-02).
And over the course of the year, he has allowed himself and his agenda to be influenced significantly by a very vocal progressive caucus (which doesn’t even comprise 50% of the House Democrats).
They are all competitive, highly diverse states which have GOP Governors and GOP legislatures which have MADE IT HARDER FOR CITIZENS TO VOTE. #VAGov
In fact, I can’t think of a single state which is competitive, has a large black or latino population and in which the GOP controls the Governorship and the State Legislature which HASN’T enacted new #VoterSuppression laws this year.
