If VLNC helps some people stop smoking, I will be glad to see it. I'm concerned about sending people the wrong message about nicotine. I'm going to park some random thoughts throughout the day in this 🧵, as I work on the @SaferWiki VLN page. safernicotine.wiki/mediawiki/inde…
1/
2/🧵 fda.gov/media/135146/d…
Some people are concerned when people making the switch from smoking to vaping dual use. What happens if people dual use cigarettes and VLNC? Is smoking less/day a good thing? Is it reducing harm? Some against vaping have said "no". Image
3/🧵fda.gov/media/135146/d… (page 6)
My concern is sending consumers the wrong message about nicotine. It's not the nicotine that causes death and disease. If someone likes smoking and doesn't want to quit they need to understand that VLNC isn't safer, it's less addictive. Image
4/🧵 fda.gov/media/135146/d… (page 7) Youth use of nicotine products has been a hotly debated topic, even when they're experimenting. Will kids experiment with VLNCs? Is it better / worse / same to experiment with VLNC vs vapor products as far as health hazards go? Image
5/🧵
There's 2 sides of the VLNC debate: Those who smoke/those who haven't. With less nicotine, there'll be less addiction and less conversion to a life time of smoking. That'd be GOOD. So maybe this is more preventative than cessation? I need more input!
6/🧵fda.gov/media/135146/d… (page 9) Will the FDA make sure that ads for VLNC don't make these products appealing to young people? Will they make sure that people in ads don't look young or cool? Image
7/🧵 fda.gov/media/135146/d…
Follow up on 6/🧵
I'm curious to know why there wasn't research on proposed ads appeal to youth? Image
8/🧵
Why does the process take so long? This took over 2.5 years! How will that work for products involving technology (vape, HnB, HTP)? By the time stuff gets this far, it will be outdated. Is there a fix for this? Image
9/🧵fda.gov/media/135146/d… (page 14) This shows why accurate communication about the potential harms of VLNCs are needed. Misperceptions about nicotine makes people believe that's what makes smoking harmful. VLNCs are not safer than smoking, they are showing to be less addictive Image
10/🧵fda.gov/media/135146/d… (page 18) as mentioned in #2, dual use of cigarettes and another nicotine product is of concern to some people. Is there a reduction of risk if there's a reduction in smoking? I found this paragraph interesting. Image
11/🧵fda.gov/media/135146/d… (page 19) I would ASSUME that most people who don't smoke don't intend on ever starting or ever smoking on a regular basis. For those folks, my concern will be if they might try VLNCs because they falsely believe they're safer because of low nicotine. Image
12/🧵fda.gov/media/135146/d… (pg 20) We won't know more about what effect this will have on youth use until a few years from now. Smoking rates among kids is already low, that's the good news. Years from now, we'll know if people continue to smoke VLNCs if they're less addictive. Image
13/🧵fda.gov/media/135146/d… (pg 20) When I think about future generations of people who smoke, this paragraph gave me hope there they'll be less of them. Image
14/🧵fda.gov/media/135146/d… (pgs 21/22) Because I'm a person with a #mentalillness this paragraph was important to me. I'm concerned about other members of my community. Mostly good news, and some rare, but bad news. When I quit nicotine, I was one of those bad news folks. Image
15/🧵I'm at work and it's time to complete my duties. I'll probably add to this thread later today. These are just random thoughts and please be aware that I'm very biased when it comes to #THR and #Smoking. My thoughts are not intended to represent those of the @SaferWiki team.

CPD = Cigarettes Per Day - That's in some of the graphics and I forgot to mention what it stands for.

My thread is starting a couple of hours late.

It is the Q&A time with Dr. King - FDA/CTP
Dr. King is very strong on his youth messaging.

@ChaunceyGardner started his question with kind words.

@Hello_Alex is speaking.

#EcigSummit #EcigSummitUS
2/x
Alex asks everyone to stop spreading misinformation.

Reminds us of the day tobacco execs were questioned.

Alex is speaking with emotion. Go Alex!!!

Says consumers and the public are hungry for honest information.

Now, questions for the panel.
An online person asks about enforcement in other countries. Debra A. is explaining in the UK.

Zeller points out CTP and DOJ priorities don't always align.

Last week @CDCTobaccoFree tweeted information about the launch of their 2024 #CDCTips campaign. This program provides tips for people who smoke and would like to quit. The tips come from the personal experience of others who have successfully quit smoking.

Several people who have quit smoking enthusiastically replied with what worked for them to help them quit smoking. I don't own a crystal ball, so I don't know what caused some of those replies to become hidden. A tech glitch or a human hid them.
3/x
But I do know that several people who quit smoking by a method that is not included in the #CDCTips felt those tweets were hidden on purpose because they believe that someone @CDCTobaccoFree doesn't agree with the method they used to quit.

Getting all the details out of the way. Reading the Conflict of Interest statement. All participants (except for the industry representatives) have been screened for COI. Industry reps are not voting members of the committee.

Up next is a presentation (I'm sorry, I'm not going to get all the names of speakers) that is an overview of the TPMP that they will be discussing today. This presentation was compiled by the FDA.

I have been seeing a therapist for a little over 1.5 years to deal with my mental health issues. It's been very helpful and has sent me on a healing journey. But it hasn't been enough. A few weeks ago, I started this course.

And wow! So many things are changing rapidly. I realize that for most of my life, I have lived in an almost constant state of alert. Knowing shit is going to hit the fan, I was constantly looking over my shoulder to see if it was here yet.

Add the racing mind of ADHD on top of that and you'll see a picture of someone who suffers from crippling anxiety. Lots of undealt with trauma. Lots of not healing from that trauma. Lots of waiting for more trauma to happen, because you know it's coming, it always does.

The tweet I'm quoting rocks me to the core. Abortion is not a topic I talk about publicly. It's an issue that has torn me in half ever since I've known what it is. I think today, I'd like to share the stories of 2 abortions that DIDN'T happen.

My husband was 17 and his first wife was 16 when they got married. She was pregnant and their families forbid an abortion and forced them to marry. They both dropped out of school. They had a little girl named Kathryn.

Mark was home alone with their daughter when she died from SIDS. Everyone blamed Mark and it tore the families apart, with members of Mark's family turning their backs on him. In a time of unfathomable grief, Mark had to deal with it alone because his wife left him...
