An Indian lab technician turns an experiment into a $333M empire.

This is the story of how one man built the iconic washing powder Nirma๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡
1/ Karsanbhai Patel was born the son of a farmer in 1945.

With a degree in Chemistry, he worked as a lab technician & the govt. thereafter

But what started as a conventional journey took a quick turn...
2/ Patel had noticed a problem in the Indian detergents market for a long time.

The Surf company and its monopoly status enabled overpricing.

But that really troubled the middle-class Indian families.

Fortunately enough, Patel took it on himself to solve this issue.
3/ Every day, after work, Patel would head to his backyard & experiment.

After months of failing, he finally nailed the perfect product!

A phosphate-free detergent of international quality.

What about the price?
4/ Selling at 1/5th the market rate, Patel undercut all his competitors.

While competitors sold their produce at $0.2/kg, Patel sold it at $0.04/kg.

But we all know that there is more to a business than the product & its price.

You also need a brand & distribution.
4/ For the first few months, Patel would sell the detergent door-to-door on his bicycle.

With a compelling product and price combination, the company started strong.

In fact, Patel even opened up a shop and named it Nirma.
5/ Named in memory of his beloved daughter, who died in a car accident, Nirma is now a household name.

But how did this lab technician scale a $333M empire?

Pricing
Marketing
Diversification

Let's break them down...
6/ When you think Nirma, you instantly think about that iconic ad.

I can honestly still hear the jingles playing in my head!

7/ What made it work?

1/ A catchy jingle that remains etched in our memories even today.

2/ Portrayal of a mainstream lifestyle catering to a broad Indian audience.

3/ Famous Indian names like Jaya & Sushma play on the mere-exposure effect - familiarity drives preference.
8/ Without even mentioning the low prices, the ad was a major success.

As the demand for Nirma rose, however, Karsanbhai chose to pull back 90% of the stock!

But after more than a month, he finally flooded the market with the detergent.

The result of this gamble?
9/ Nirma beat Surf at their own game.

By 1990, Nirma had slowly acquired 15% of the market share in India.

And in 2000, Nirma had beat Surf (31%) with a 38% market share.

But Karsanbhai Patel did not stop there.
10/ Leveraging their expertise and distribution networks in FMCGs,
Nirma has now branched out into:

Soaps
Cement
Soda Ash
Cosmetics
Injectables

The company even caters to higher-income users with its premium products.
11/ Karsanbhai is India's 46th Richest Man.

Along with a net worth of $3.6B, he has:

Received the Padma Shri in 2010
Built Gujarat's largest private university

But an empire that seems to be growing is actually in some trouble.
12/ Over the last decade or so, Nirma has experienced several hiccups.

For instance, the market share of the detergent has fallen to ~7%

For many reasons, it has lost out to companies like P&G.
13/ Due to outdated tech, rising input prices, and a stagnant media strategy, the Nirma detergent has fallen behind.

But instead of standing still, Karsanbhai & family are pivoting into chemicals & cement.

And they are very serious about it.
14/ In 2007, Nirma Group acquired Searle Valley Minerals to become the 7th largest producer of soda ash globally.

After that, they even acquired a few healthcare and cement businesses.

Most recently, the Nirma Group acquired Emami Cement at a value of ~$733M.
15/ Even though the detergent biz depleted, the Patel family continues to give a fight!

With such perseverance, passion, & catchy lyrics, the Nirma Group has left an impression on Indians everywhere.

Now, all we can hope for is a successful pivot & a solid comeback.
17/ Key Takeaways from this story:

1. All you need to do is outplay your comp. in just 1 valuable dimension.

2. Build your brand image first, so it's easier to scale later.

3. Diversify in the short term so you can pivot in the long term.

Within 20 years, Moser Baer became the world's 2nd largest CD manufacturer.

The crazy part?

It's worth nothing today.

Here is the story behind Moser Baer's steady rise and sudden demise๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡
Deepak Puri was born and brought up in the state of New Delhi.

Entrepreneurial to begin with, he was always launching the next big idea.

The first one - a manufacturer of aluminum wires, pipes, & conductors.
It started off well but the violent pressures from the labor unions forced a sudden shutdown.

But that was no big deal for Puri, he dusted it off and went about building.

The second venture - a time recorder for bankers. A very promising start...

The 2011 World Cup Man of the Series.

And a comeback from cancer.

This is the crazy story of the Prince of Cricket ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡
Yuvraj Singh was born on 12th December 1981 in Chandigarh.

As a kid, he was very interested in roller skating and even won the U-14 National Skating championship.

But that victory in skating is the reason his journey in cricket really started...
When Yuvi won the medal, his father, surprisingly, decided to throw it!

He told his son:

"I understand you canโ€™t study but if you love sports so much at least take one that can get you somewhereโ€ฆfocus on cricket."

And just like that, Yuvi's life - as we know it - changed.

I'm a student at college.
Here's my daily routine ๐Ÿงต

7 am: I shut my alarm and get out of bed. My roommate looks pissed but I say sorry, the grind never stops.

8 am: I text my fam "Wish me luck for my exam!" My dad responds by asking me about my major.
9 am: I start watching lecture videos at 2X speed. Goes over my head so just watch YouTube & Khan Academy instead.

10 am: I finish two sessions of the Pomodoro technique. You know the classic work for 10 & chill for 50. Now, it's exam time...
11 am: I finish the exam and discussed it with my friends. Left that room more confused than I was going in.

12 pm: I sit down for lunch and have a long meal. Keep thinking about what's worse - my performance or the food?
