To all who have panned @GhostPanther's #DontLookUp, i have another set of metaphors for you:

The wreck of the Estonia in Sept. 1994

(excerpted below)

Re. your criticisms of #DontLookUp:

theatlantic.com/magazine/archi…

1/22
@GhostPanther 'Survival that night was a very tight race, & savagely simple. People who started early & moved fast had some chance of winning. People who started late or hesitated for any reason had no chance at all. Action paid. Contemplation did not.'

2/
@GhostPanther Re. #degrowth, #solarpunk, & #walkaway:

'The mere act of getting dressed was enough to condemn people to death, & although many of those who escaped to the water succumbed to the cold, most of the ultimate winners endured the ordeal completely naked or in their underwear.

3/
@GhostPanther The survivors all seem to have grasped the nature of this race, the first stage of which involved getting outside to the Deck 7 promenade without delay.

4/
@GhostPanther There was no God to turn to for mercy.

There was no government to provide order.

Civilization was ancient history, Europe a faint and faraway place.

5/
@GhostPanther Inside the ship, as the heel increased, even the most primitive social organization, the human chain, crumbled apart.

Love only slowed people down. A pitiless clock was running.

The ocean was completely in control.

6/
@GhostPanther Oddly enough, the relative distance that people had to travel seems to have made little difference.'

7/
@GhostPanther To all who praised #DontLookUp but called it 'the first great climate change film':

Don't Look Up is great, but as many such as @neiltyson have said, it's a documentary, not a film.

First Reformed, She Dies Tomorrow, and Silent Running are all great films.

8/
@GhostPanther @neiltyson (Similarly:

@ksrinfo's Ministry for the Future is not a novel, it's a RAND report.

@nealstephenson has written two great climate change novels: SevenEves and Anathem. Termination Shock, not so much.
)

9/
@GhostPanther @neiltyson @ksrinfo @nealstephenson To all who have criticised @GhostPanther for posting 'wrong answers' to climate change:

10/
@GhostPanther @neiltyson @ksrinfo @nealstephenson .. it's hopeful that you see that the 'approved' answers are unworkable.

But there are two further realisations i see very few of you making:

11/
@GhostPanther @neiltyson @ksrinfo @nealstephenson 1. Only a few researchers (e.g. @_ppmv himself, and he can name the rest) have consistently and rigorously pointed out that we have no workable solutions.

The degrowth needed seems impossible without collapse ..

12/
@GhostPanther @neiltyson @ksrinfo @nealstephenson @_ppmv .. We'll have to sit in the fire for awhile longer and see how collapse changes the landscape before we can move en masse.

The way through can only be emergent, and cannot be prestated.

(more here: neuroplastic.github.io/climate_social…)

13/
@GhostPanther @neiltyson @ksrinfo @nealstephenson @_ppmv 2. @GhostPanther et al. get something powerfully right, that most climate researchers get wrong: climate change at this scale is not a civilisation-ending event, it is a world-ending event.

We do not in fact face 'climate change', but the Gaian Bottleneck:

14/
@GhostPanther @neiltyson @ksrinfo @nealstephenson @_ppmv

On the other side of the bottleneck, the Earth fails as a life-bearing planet. Unless ..

How we respond is the key, not to our own survival, but to the survival of Earth as a life-bearing planet.

15/
@GhostPanther @neiltyson @ksrinfo @nealstephenson @_ppmv Now, if you want to argue that this is a scientifically unprovable claim, i refer you back to the metaphor of the wreck of the Estonia.

16/
@GhostPanther @neiltyson @ksrinfo @nealstephenson @_ppmv My actual unprovable claim is that it was always meant to be this way:

humanity was evolved to both trigger and manage the transition of the planetary biome to self-managing homeostasis.

17/
Hopefully, @LeoDiCaprio is getting warm to this in eulogising E.O.Wilson:

18/
@LeoDiCaprio Like #DontLookUp, the sinking of the Estonia is a good metaphor for climate change, with this key difference:

Your choices from now forward will not decide whether you survive or die, but simply whether it is possible for you *as a class* to survive.

19/
@LeoDiCaprio Here are two questions, your answers to which are closely related:

Are you critical of #DontLookUp?

Do 1 billion die and 7 billion survive, or do 7 billion die and 1 billion survive, as we traverse the Gaian Bottleneck?

20/
@LeoDiCaprio If the answer is 1:7, then rule of law manifests sustainable developmental justice in the form of a world court prosecuting ecocide.

This gives us a chance at surviving, naked or in our underwear.

21/
@LeoDiCaprio If our answer is 1:7, then maybe 1 billion will make it into the 23rd century.

If our answer is 7:1, then effectively none of us survive, and the Earth dies.

Happy 2022!

First i want to say that @evgenymorozov and @syllabus_tweets are vital resources for economic transformation.

Evgeny's 'Digital Socialism?' in the New Left Review and Lea Ypi's cyberflaneur are both unmissable for scoping the crypto mid-game.

1/
Evgeny's recent thread, though, is a rare miss from a sharpshooter. I feel i'm likely jumping on these 1 hour old posts before Evgeny's enteric brain kicks in and he retracts them.

2/
'These Web 3 people, having never read their Foucault' is a howler.

Like saying, 'these capitalist people, having never read their Adam Smith'.

Hi #web3 and #nft critics & defenders.

In the 2010's, i was pro-crypto. One Israeli friend i introduced to BTC became a major player.

Ca. 2020, as a @project_solid & p2p dev, i became anti-crypto.

It took a while for me to understand what was trying to happen w. crypto.

1/19
The following is inspired positively by pro- & anti-web3 thinkers alike:

@jchris, @mikeal, @tvachon, @RichDecibels, @andrestaltz, @mrchrisadams, @whimful, @hackylawyER, @smdiehl, @Grady_Booch, @brianeno et al.

It's a productive & historic debate. Let's take it up a notch:

2/
Both sides in the NFT debate tend to focus on whether NFTs work as a technology, as a sound investment, or as a store of value, as if they were a finished product.

If you're somewhere with lots of maskless people about at this critical juncture, here is an immune-boosting idea from this 2014 paper:

Voluntary activation of the sympathetic nervous system and attenuation of the innate immune response in humans

1/
This Dutch research team showed that using the Wim Hof technique -

meditation, exposure to cold, and breathing techniques, in combination ..

2/
.. leads to profound increases in the release of epinephrine, which in turn leads to increased production of anti-inflammatory mediators and subsequent dampening of proinflammatory cytokine response.

Implementation of real adaptation to climate change 3/10:

Background:
The biological basis for world government in the context of climate change

1/19
Nation-states have been captured by interests interpreting the global situation as one of zero-sum survival, following the same lines of instinctual reaction which precipitated WWII.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Ear…

2/19
The scope of these reactive interests is to survive what they perceive as the collapse of human civilisation, and the subsequent global holocaust, bottleneck, or Jackpot, in which several billion humans lose all human rights and are de facto 'deniably' murdered.

1/10 @NobleDenis has done something truly great in shepherding 'Cause of Cambrian Explosion - Terrestrial or Cosmic?' by Steele et al., to publication in Prog. Biophys. Mol. Biol. 2018 ..

sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
2/10 Publishing the review is itself a powerful statement, but *not* about who wins in neodarwinists vs. panspermians: if the tone of the review is triumphal, it's not because panspermia wins, but because the stasis of neodarwinism is broken. Image
3/10 What comes next is not the ascendence of the story or methods of the authors, but a 'Cambrian explosion' of new stories and methods. Not a new set of ideas in Science, but a new idea of Science. Not just panspermianism, but multiple giant back-flips are on the doorstep. Image
