🧵 1/ "Flipped" #NFT projects have become de rigueur—but copyright infringement is a gaping problem. Granted, this is probably what propelled Phunks/PHAYCs, but due to the licensing, they have to operate in the shadows. A thread on why @flipmap, a @blitmap deriv, is different: 
2/ @blitmap was by @dhof that launched in spring of 2021 that went under the radar for a couple of months. There were 100 original pieces and minting was "communagenerative," where a composition could be combined with the palette of another piece. blitmap.com/archive
3/ But there was a catch, only 16 siblings could be made for each composition. This put the collection at 1700 pieces (100 originals + 16 siblings). Even though it took months to mint out, @blitmap became a vibrant community (I was tipped off to it by @Zeneca_33).
4/ @dhof and the 16 @blitmap OG artists took an incredible step to license the first 100 originals as CC0, or public domain. The community followed suit and the entire Blitmap universe is now able to be remixed and adapted, even commercially: blitmap.mirror.xyz/b-ANHRCj78z9Qy… (@viamirror)
5/ This has led to a community building and creating on top of the @blitmap ground floor (including yours truly with @blitnoun—a "nouned" blitmap). The idea is that subsequent derivatives drive back value to the originals.
6/ But there was a desire from the community to "resurrect" those lost @blitmap pieces, ie the 83 siblings w/palettes that went uncrafted. TODAY, @altcryp & @traderinthezone just released @flipmap—the ability to create those lost blits in an #onchain way with @flipmap! SAY WHAT!?
7/ Rather than doing this on the fringes, they are doing it in the open, thanks to the CC0 license. And the community is responding. Of the 8,300 available @flipmap already 450 have been created at a 0.03ETH mint price. This is with ZERO publicity/marketing. But it gets better.
8/ @flipmap also chose to give the original @blitmap artists 25% of the initial sale EVEN THOUGH THEY DIDN'T HAVE TO. So, an OG artist stands to make 0.25 * ( 0.03 ETH) * (83 NFTs) = 0.6225 ETH/composition!
9/ This shows that Flipmap gets it. This isn't charity, it's smart business: they're taking care of the artists that have taken care of them (and the @blitmap community at large). What happens? Blitmap holders are minting, posting and proselytizing (including me).
10/ @blitmap had been a pricy on ramp, but with these new 8,300 derivatives, it provides an accessible way for some folks to have access to the community. Already @flipmap set up a discord where a lot of Blitmap holders/artists are hanging out: discord.gg/adKSX8ET
11/ while gun shy about committing to a roadmap, they did acknowledge it. Consequently, this deriv project has the potential to grow and mature and create more access for folks to the @blitmap universe. This has been something on the mind of many—CC0 derivs can help with this.
12/ THIS is the power of CC0. And, because @flipmap and @blitmap are both #onchain (ie all the assets and data are stored immutably), the composable nature of #web3 could also open up other opportunities in 2022 that I can't even think of.
13/ At any rate, I am really excited about @flipmap and how it can potentially interact and even impact @blitmap as a whole. Disclosure: I minted 20 of these Flipmap #NFTs. While it may appear I'm trying to shill my bags, I'm genuinely excited to see what can happen next. #DYOR
