I posted this b/c the behavior of Omicron is fascinating. Please remember that vaxx'd + boosted people are highly protected against severe infection. Our hospitalizations rates are very low. I'm really concerned for hospital capacity. I also have faith in my own immune system.
I'm *not* saying "it's all gonna be okay." It's not going to be okay for people w/ compromised immunity. It's not going to be okay for our hospitals, which has consequences for all of us. We need to protect vulnerable people + our hospitals by being vaxx'd & masking up.
I don't want to catch Omicron. My immune system is not the greatest. Which is why I got TB! I also have extensive lung damage from TB. It takes me forever to clear a mild cold. I still have confidence that my immune system has power against this variant given my boosted status.
I am very concerned for our hospital system & for medical workers. I'm concerned for vulnerable adults + kids. I've told my boosted parents to isolate b/c they don't want to get a fever from *anything* right now. I am very concerned. I also have confidence in my own immune system
We can see these curves and we SHOULD be concerned. We should protect ourselves and others. We also have to remember that, if we're vaxx'd & boosted, our bodies have power to fight this pathogen. That doesn't mean "be nonchalant." It does mean, "your body is not powerless"
Here are the hospitalization rates for unvaxx'd vs. vaxx'd people. Every body is different, mine certainly is, and there are people who are more vulnerable than me, but, as a group, vaxx'd people are doing really well. Our bodies were powerless in 2020. They're not powerless now
The next thing to remember is that part of the danger of COVID is that your OWN body freaked out when it saw it. Now your body recognizes it. This means your body 1. can fight COVID itself & 2. will not nuclear-bomb itself over a novel pathogen
In 1985, hemophiliac HIV+ children were being kicked out of schools. Scientists asked President Reagan to plainly state HIV could not spread through "casual contact." Reagan instead said the science was still out. This approach was recommended by his legal advisor, John G Roberts
At that time, gay men in particular were suffering from AIDS in the US, as were other groups, such as those who used intravenous drugs. The hemophiliac population was struck almost all at once, thru the blood supply. Kids w/ hemophilia were expelled + had their houses burned down
Reagan would not listen to gay men or other vulnerable people who were dying en masse. There was a sense, however, that he would say something to protect children from stigma. Reagan, with the guidance of now Supreme Court Justice John Roberts, did the opposite.
Omicron wave: Hospitals will be just as, if not more strained, than before. Boosted, non-vulnerable people don't have to live in extreme fear re: their personal health, tho they should be cautious. Everyone will likely be affected by extreme disruptions in societal functioning.
The sheer number of *mild* breakthrough cases, in combo w/ more severe cases, will mean worker shortages unlike what we've seen before. This will impact individual businesses & the supply chain. Schools are going to be a hot mess.
Don't freak out about your own health if you're boosted. Yes, be cautious, but you have a lot of protection. Of course you also need to protect those around you. That said, *everyone* needs to prepare in a non-frantic way for the worker shortages.
Omicron:
Will likely be devastating to unvaxxd people
Will harm hospitals & medical workers
Will cause other worker shortages
Will put kids & immunocompromised people in danger
This is all awful
If you are a vaxx'd adult w/o immunocompromise, you're in a relatively safe position
Everyone should wear an N95, ensure they are boosted, etc. Your personal health is fairly well assured thru boosters. You still want to maintain maximum protection for yourself & for others thru masking. I would also try to avoid other things that could land you in the hospital
The boosters work. Protect yourself and others by masking & taking precautions & remember, our immune systems recognize this now. They are fighting Omicron. Your body has a power it didn't have in 2020. It has *some* immunity. Be very careful, but don't be terrified.
That’s not to say that the government has done a perfect job, but we have free vaccines and if everyone would do what the government has been pleading with them to do for 10 months and get vaccinated we’d all be in a much better position
I have no idea, frankly none, why anyone is choosing to undermine the government *as a whole* when what we need is people to more carefully listen to the government’s solution to the problem which is a *vaccine.*
It's ironic that the creators of Don't Look Up are also caricatures in the crisis. Obama got the globe to sign a climate change agreement. Trump abandoned it. Don't look at that difference. Biden's pushing climate change legislation that the GOP opposes. Don't look at that either
The Paris Climate Accord is in no way perfect, but it was still a big deal. And Build Back Better would also make a big difference. Both are more meaningful than a star-studded film. Yet the climate warriors behind that film are actively discouraging advocating for such action.
"Don't Look Up" satirized politicians' response to climate change, as well as the press's. Maybe it would have been a more successful satire if it had included political hipsters. Those who believe posturing in favor of a good cause is more valiant than actually fighting for it.
No it doesn't. It renders the votes of San Franciscans, New Yorkers, *and* Oklahomans completely moot. None have much power when it comes to national elections. Which is why no Presidential candidate ever visits Oklahoma or talks to Oklahomans. The EC means y'all don't matter.
Dems know there's no reason to appeal to anyone in the state & GOP knows the same, so they take you for granted
So much power, right?
I wonder if there's a system that would incentivize candidates to pay attention to your state. Perhaps. . .a system that counts all the votes?
Yeah, the Electoral College makes it so Oklahoma is one of the lowest turnout states in the nation and nobody cares about us, BUT we can go to bed at night knowing our vote theoretically counts more than someone's in *San Francisco* & this is what real political power looks like.
