But success is like an iceberg: 90% lies beneath the surface.

Too few show only the wins.

Instead, let’s break down the “how” 👇
First, a key theme.

This year I learned an invaluable lesson.

Perhaps the most valuable there is.

That *everything* starts with self.

Improve your inner world, and the outer world will follow.

Ok here we go…
1/ Face the tough problems head-on

Hard problems are easy to ignore.

Who wants to address them head on? Uncomfortable!

Well... here’s the truth.

Kick the can down the road, and sign up for a world of hurt.
2/ Make unpopular decisions

Committee culture ruins everything.

When organizations become fear-based, leaders stop owning decisions.

Make it a group decision, and there’s no one to blame!

Good leaders don’t hide, they lead.
3/ Work hyper-consciously

Work can easily become unconscious:

Unconscious meetings, unconsciously checking off task lists.

Lazy, exhausting, useless.

Now, a shift: every action measured for impact.

Not just for me, but for the whole team.
4/ Start putting pen to paper

There’s no better way to cement learnings than writing them down.

Can a good leader also write books and Tweet?

Absolutely.

Done right, it will make them better.
5/ Make every day count

Everyone knows that success is compounding.

Take advantage of this lesson by treating every day as if it were the most important.

If do this day in and day out,

You’ll pick your head up in a month, astonished.
6/ Focus on the inputs

Bill Walsh has a great quote: “The Score Takes Care of Itself”

Too many focus on the score.

Focus on the score, and you’re not focused on the game.

Focus on the game, and the score takes care of itself.
7/ Think bigger

It’s easy to tell yourself why it’s unreasonable to do X or Y.

We’re our own worst critics.

Get out there and own your power.

Believe in yourself when no one else will.
8/ Get serious about health

Health is everything.

Diet, exercise, mental, physical.

In order to be all-in at work, be all-in on health.

This is the prerequisite to doing anything long-term.

And building something great is a marathon.
9/ Dance thru life’s problems

Every day I dance for 20 minutes.

It’s the ultimate life hack!

We have the answer to all our problems, but just sometimes our minds get stuck.

Dance your way through it.
10/ Start impact work

Hearing repeatedly “isn’t it too early to do nonprofits?”

My answer: absolutely not.

I poured my all into The Movement & Conscious Culture Foundation.

Causes you care about are so fulfilling.

It motives through the darkest days.
Overall,

Business, books, foundations… those are all byproducts.

The *actual* product is you.

Inner work is the gift that keeps on giving.

Do the work, and have it for a lifetime.
In 2021,

All I did was take this insight to heart.

When I did, everything clicked.

Product market fit, a thread:
Many founders come from accomplished career-paths or elite universities.

They really struggle with PMF.

Why?

Because in school or most jobs, the problem-set is defined.

PMF is completely undefined; there is no “right answer.”
With PMF, there are no rules.

That’s what makes it so brutal.

Like creating art, it’s an open-ended act of creation.

Do people really love what you’ve created?

With art and business alike, this is the only question that matters.

Building a company is like building an army:
Aside from physical violence, companies and armies are basically the same.

Each must be incredibly strategic about resources, attack plans, and alliances.

Each must keep their troops happy with either a righteous mission (missionaries), good compensation (mercenaries), or both.
Like a good attack-plan, companies must define their vector for attacking a market.

You might have heard that every software company is either a bundler or unbundler.

This is spot-on.

Some do more than incumbents while others do fewer things exceptionally well.

In your field, know more than anyone.
Form a unique perspective

Starting something new is not just about knowledge accumulation.

It’s also about thinking differently.
