TOMORROW'S HEADLINES: world famous climate scientist Dr James Hansen warns of 2°C as soon as 2040 but urges "don't despair" 🧵
🧵1. Emergency degrowth action could delay/avoid 1.5°C-2°C

(the destructive economic growth of capitalism will take us over dire 2°C within decades according to most climate scientists.)

2. The risk of an aerosol termination shock is not being reported. Just one or two journalists have covered this.

See thread:
🧵3. State-corporate journalists and editors are ignoring Dr James Hansen's important observations, so it's unlikely to be headline news any time soon. Extraordinary really, but not surprising.

Emissions are projected to rise to record levels over the next 3 or 4 years. The danger is dire 1.6°C-2°C at >450 ppm of CO2 by the 2030s as aerosols are cut - that's world ending for a horrific number of people and species. We must focus on the 2020s, 2030s, & 2040s!

If we..🧵
🧵1.

are going to discuss 2100 in terms of pledges and policies, surely we need to acknowledge that 3-4°C is still possible even if we don't question the assumptions behind them!?

The planet we think we're living on no longer exists.
State-corporate media are radically downplaying the most important story in human history.

The words 'abrupt climate change' are nowhere to be found. Even 'climate change' is relegated to paragraph 23 in many articles or missing entirely.

1.8-2C by 2035?
We need extraordinary, fair, emergency, system change action to limit the doom. 🕊️💚

Record-breaking heat on January 1st 2022, but no mention of abrupt climate change.

In fact, no mention of the climate-extinction catastrophe anywhere on the Guardian homepage.

In 2022!

Just happy people.

Enjoying a swim.

Do you see what's going on yet?theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/j…
1. 'St James’s Park in central London provisionally beat the record with a temperature of 16.2C, the Met Office said.'

Surely the Met Office mentioned abrupt climate change?!?

2. No mention of abrupt climate change in any Met Office tweets in the last few days.

This four and a half minute video talks about remarkable and exceptionally mild weather, but no context or explanation is given. No mention of abrupt climate change.

BREAKING: Earth's land and water ecosystems are 'on the brink of collapse' says new UN report 🧵
1. 'only by working together can we bring land, soil, and water ecosystems back from the brink'

But this extinction economy does not allow us to work together.

Profound system change required.

We should be talking about agroecology.

2a. 'The scale and intensity of current land and water use for agriculture are not sustainable at many local levels. In some cases, this extends to the global level when just-in-time supply can break down, particularly if unforeseen drought drastically reduces crop production.'👇
