There is no Covid press briefing today! However, Health Commissioner Dr. Mark Levine is going to be on @vermontedition, so I'll tweet out any salient remarks. (And tomorrow afternoon the governor delivers his State of the State address. @vprnet will carry it live.) #vtpoli
@vermontedition @vprnet Governor Scott announced at the end of last week's briefing that there wouldn't be one today, because of the State of the State. (I believe the same thing happened last year, with the inauguration.)
@vermontedition @vprnet Meanwhile, new Covid dashboard stats show the highest one-day total ever for Vermont. (Dashboard currently says it was last updated yesterday, but @healthvermont confirms these are new numbers.) healthvermont.gov/covid-19/curre…
.@vermontedition is beginning with an update from Quebec, with @CBCNews reporter @katemckenna8. Yesterday the province had a daily record of over 15,000 new infections. McKenna says with more than 200 new hospital admissions reported today, the province is reaching capacity.
@vermontedition While the Vermont conversation revolves around the issue of a statewide and municipal mask mandates, Quebec has much stricter mitigation measures, including a nightly curfew.
@vermontedition McKenna says Quebec is basically at max capacity for testing as well. And the province is considering adding new restrictions to people who are unvaccinated.
@vermontedition After the break, @healthvermont commissioner Dr. Mark Levine joins the show. If you have questions for him, you can tweet @vermontedition or email vermontedition@vpr.org, or call! 1-800-639-2211. Host @mikafrak will be fielding your questions and asking her own.
Lefrak asks Dr. Levine what he thinks of the mitigation measures in Quebec compared to Vt. He points out that the US in general has had fewer restrictions than Canada and many European countries.
Levine says some countries previously using strict mitigation measures aren't, like New Zealand & Australia. As for Quebec, he says the big issue is that the hospital situation in QC is nearing crisis. But right now Vermont is NOT at a crisis point in terms of hospital capacity.
Mask update: "I still fully believe A mask is better than no mask." But single layer cloth mask is not as effective against omicron. So either use double cloth mask, cloth mask over surgical mask, or KN95 mask, if you have access to them.
Early in the pandemic there were reports of fake or non-effective KN95 masks on the market, but Levine says most masks being advertised now are legit, so you can have more confidence ordering/purchasing them.
Statewide mask mandate "still on the table" but Levine says the state continues to rely on cooperation, not a rule. (So, no change in stance.)
FDA just authorized boosters for kids age 12-15. In addition, some children age 5-11 w/ compromised immune systems are now eligible for an early 3rd dose. AND, time btw first 2 doses and booster for Pfizer only has been reduced from 6 months to 5 months. cnbc.com/2022/01/03/fda…
Levine says there are still a few details the state is waiting on to implement these changes, but that shouldn't take long and the state is placing a high priority on in-person learning for school children.
On lack of testing (both PCR and rapid) over the holidays and now, Levine says the demand was a good thing (but doesn't address if VT could have done a better job of anticipating/ holiday demand). Says test availability should get back to normal now that holidays are over.
Lots of questions/concerns about why rapid tests aren't picking up the omicron variant as well. Levine says he thinks those tests are still picking up what needs to be picked up.
Some of the rapid tests aren't picking up the virus early on, because people just don't have enough viral load yet. But if you are feeling sick, you should stay away from others regardless of test results. ME: I found this article really helpful: slate.com/technology/202…
If you order tests and they are left outside and get cold, it's unclear if their accuracy could be affected. Levine says it's probably fine but more info being gathered on that.
Levine says the 0-5 age group is a "true priority" for the state, and it was supply chain issues that prevented the state from offering free test kits to that age group along with school-aged kids. Says they should soon be available to younger kids as well.
Levine says we should be hearing more this week about plans to get testing to the younger age groups.

That's it from @vermontedition today! Thanks for reading.

No press briefing today (1/4/22), but there was a new modeling report. You can see all 60 slides, as always, on the DFR website. Here’s the link to today’s report: dfr.vermont.gov/sites/finreg/f…

I’ll share a few slides that stuck out to me in a 🧵. Here’s the overall summary. Image
Cases are up, a lot. And the forecast is for a lot more. ImageImageImage
Although the case rate is increasing at a higher level for vaccinated individuals, those who are unvaccinated are still much more likely to have serious complications or death. ImageImageImage

🧵This morning on the way to school my 7yo piped up from the backseat, “I almost don’t even remember not wearing a mask!” Then he cast his mind back to spring, when he’d asked if he was going to have to go through another December birthday w/out a celebration because of Covid. 1/
“And you said you didn’t think so. And now my birthday is only 17 days away and we are still in Covid.” Then my 5yo said what she thought was a ludicrous statement: “Maybe Covid will be with us forever.” They were both surprised when I had to admit up that it probably will be. 2/
These kids (all kids) have been through a lot. They’ve had to forgo play dates, birthday parties, cultural and learning experiences, visits with grandparents. They’ve experienced deep familial loss and stressed out parents. 3/

Howdy, friends! I hope you are ready for yet another #vtpoli #covid19vt press conference twitter storm. I'm only going to be tweeting the first hour today, probably up to question time, because then I have to duck out for this:
Please join me on @TwitterSpaces at 1pm for that chat. In the meantime, answer me this: would it be helpful for me to go back and tweet the rest of the presser when I'm done, so you can have the full thread, even if it's not in real time? Or is it less helpful if it's not live?
Governor Scott begins today reminding people who gathered over the holiday week to get tested now. "Finding cases helps contain them before they spread to more people, and they will continue to be an essential tool for years to come." Increased cases expected in the coming weeks.

I just recently learned that you can make perfect jīdàn gēng, steamed egg custard, in 5 minutes in the microwave and I want to eat it for every single meal for the rest of my life!!
For the recipe: NYT Food featured it recently but I don't have a subscription (yet!) so I just googled a bunch of recipes and cobbled together something that looked right to me. Here's what I did: (see next tweet)
Beat 2 eggs and 2/3 cup chicken broth (many of the Korean recipes used broth, lots of Chinese ones used water, and for Japanese chawanmushi, which I love, you can use dashi, but I didn't have any). I microwave the broth for 30 seconds so it isn't too cold. Add a little salt. 1/

🚨🚨Heads up! Today’s #vtpoli #covid19vt press briefing begins early, at 11:30am. You can listen on @vprnet and I’ll be tweeting! Consider this an extra early start to the thread.🚨🚨
After it’s over, stick around for a broadcast of @ButWhyKids. Our latest episode of this international show for kids is set right here in Vermont, at Champlain Orchards. That will air when the post-presser analysis ends.
As we await the start of the briefing, take a look at this, from the state’s new modeling report. Cases are up significantly in Vermont. You can find the full report here: dfr.vermont.gov/about-us/covid…

Okay, Tuesday press briefing any moment now. Tune to @vprnet to hear analysis up until it starts and afterwards. And here's a thread for those who don't want to sit and listen for 2 hours! #vtpoli #vted #covid19vt
@vprnet A few asides. I got a COVID test last Thursday afternoon (I had attended a family funeral in Maine--masked indoors but unmasked for the outdoor reception, so I wanted to be on the safe side). Results came back on Saturday morning. Anyone still struggling to get timely results?
And I just got this note from my kids’ elementary school. Now very much hoping to hear more this hour. #vted
