Today, we have an idea about a Prasidh Krishna (9 FC matches) or an Avesh Khan (27 FC matches) because some selector, somewhere, has at least seen these boys play red-ball matches and tried assessing their skill-sets.

But what next? Where's the feeder line? Look at Umran Malik for example. He's 22 already and has played just one First Class game. Three years lost to the pandemic. Nobody's fault. But in ideal circumstances Umran should've been "getting ready" by now.

Was in the company of some men yesterday who've played this game at the highest level and track domestic cricket well. Had a simple question: Any other fast bowler -- outside of Prasidh, Avesh, Umran -- they can think of?

That's where BCCI's national coaching program, monitored by its National Cricket Academy (NCA) needs to be in focus. It had to figure a way to coordinate with state associations and keep track of what can be expected.

There's so much focus on Team India and IPL alone at the moment that everything else is getting sidelined. The pandemic is nobody's fault. But some alternative needs to be figured.
