THREAD
There is a category of people here who say "never work for free get a retainer"
Which is the absolute most garbage advice on Earth.
Astoundingly small % of people will give you money unless they're CERTAIN they'll get a return
Which brings me to this
If you are selling a service the ABSOLUTE ONLY THING the person cares about is getting a POSITIVE RETURN on their investment.
THAT IS IT.
Nothing else matters
But since you don't have social proof you need to manufacture certainty.
You need to REDUCE THE RISK on the prospect.
Here's how you do that
1. Work on a performance basis.
You will execute a service.
You ONLY get paid IF you generate a positive return.
You need quantify this properly.
If you're a copywriter who writes sales pages and go "I'll take a % of profits from the sales page"
No.
They ALREADY have a sales page with copy that generates money.
Your copy might actually *decrease* conversions
You take a % of the INCREASE in conversions.
If they're converting at 2% and you take it to 2.5%
And the product is $200
And that 0.5% increase directly resulted in, say, $3,000 extra dollars
You take a cut of the INCREASE
2. You work for free specifically to get a case study.
You document every single aspect of your work.
This is not only for showing it later but also for *actually becoming competent*
I know you just bought some courses and watched some YouTube videos but it's hard to understate just how actually not good you are in the beginning
You need to do this for a LONG TIME to be world class.
Make the prospect aware that once you're generating them income you want to transition to performance based and that you're doing this specifically to get a testimonial/case study.
There are no short cuts.
"Don't work for free" is bad advice.
"Only work on retainer" is bad advice.
If you're committed to becoming good performance based will make you a LOT more more.
I spend like $6k/mo on rent, food, and everything I otherwise feel like doing at any moment so by definition you need about $72k/yr to do whatever you want as a single person (after tax)
This is with living in expensive real estate marketing (Tampa right now, Miami in 2 weeks)
market*
Assign $100k/yr to discretionary spending the rest above that is wealth creation
